View Full Version : Swingarm Lengthening ?'s

I plan on lengthening a swingarm for my '86 250R in the near future and I have a few questions. I know a lot of people on this board have longer than stock swingarms, and I was wondering what you all do for skidplates now.
Do any companies offer skidplates for longer swingarms?
Did you lengthen your skidplate as well as the swingarm, or do you just ride without a skidplate now?
Also, I'm only planning on going +2" over the stock length, so I'd like to hear from people with similarly lengthened swingarms on how the rear suspension action was before & after rear shock revalving, or did you not revalve the rear shock after the lengthening process?
Thanks for the help.

i found my suspension to be much more plush and wheelies much more controllable. i really like my +2, it doesnt effect you at all in the trails IMO, but i dont even find a +4 to effect trails much either... its well worth the time to have a +2 done, and you wont regret it. we extend swingarms for people for 150$ and we relocate the skidplate mounts so the stock plate works.

Unless there's something I'm missing, I don't understand how relocating the skidplate mounting tabs will allow the use of an unmodified skidplate. I'll be cutting the swingarm between the rear shock mount/rear bearing carrier, and adding the 2" there. Since the skidplate has a set distance between the bulge for the rear shock and the guards for the disc/sprocket, that distance will need to be increased as well, correct?
Dammit!

You just ride sand right? What need do you have for a skid plate?
I have a modified +3 on the way. I told him to just cut the mounts off since I won't be riding anything but dunes with it.

My +2 westcoast has skid mounts but uses an aftermarket skid. I know it will fit both stock and lengthened swingarms but I don't know if a stocker would work with the added length. It might help if you space it further away from the swingarm but you will loose a little ground clearance.

I extended my 86 swinger 3" and then simply bolted on a piece of 3/16" plate aluminum with spacers and curved to fit and clear all the rotating gear. It actually works quite well...think surfboard under your swinger and you'll get an idea.
