Well a couple weeks back, I picked up a goki starter kit for the 84 S and with the package came a flyer for JLATV saying they are having a liquidation sale, so for 20 bucks a piece I got some 4/150 hubs for the rear. I already had the rims and some tires kicking about so hey quick easy upgrade.
Well i installed the goki kit first, the battery box clearance wasnt very much between the 22"s 3/4 inch maybe, figure it has something to do with the original test bed versus my unit. So I didn't put on the bigger hubs yet.
Well two weeks ago, I lowered the tire pressure down(correction I just pulled the cores) on the 22's and was out at the winter carnival, the little thing did great all day, cruised right through 18" of snow all day and if you got up on the hardpack it wasnt any worse then cruising on dirt. Well finally after running the tires at the low pressure all weekend, it finally caught the battery box edge, that i had forgotten about and killed a sidewall.
So at that point i was convinced that it was time to remove the battery box till I can relocate it, and went about slapping on the bigger hubs.
I already had a turbuster on one of the rims, so for a quick solution (and cheap due to my nice logistics branch discount at walmart) I grabbed another turfbuster and had them mount it up(my tire machine doesnt go down to the 9 inch rim and i didn't want to change it by hand). Slapped them on drove about, did good but they didn't clean for doopy. Well that was a bummer, but kind of expected. Also noticed that the freshly mounted one hadn't quite seated right on the bead. Easy enough fix, ran inside inflated it up to 15psi like direct and... Nothing... Went inside got my insurance paperwork out onto the counter and then proceeded to inflate it up to 40 psi, still nothing... So at this point it hadn't blown up yet, so I decide to do like i do with the big truck tires and dribble it some, 10 minutes later it popped onto the bead, and I dumped the air pressure from the tire. Slapped it back onto the trike and took it for a spin just for the hard work. I'm not sure what happened exactly, but the tire was no longer hard anymore at 2psi like the other tire. It was actually soft, must have broke it in and stretched it some by running it up so high in pressure and dribbling it about. Also noted it didn't clog up anymore and was actually cleaning itself out. Plan to do the same to the other tire at some point aswell. Results, 24" snow drifts no longer a problem, if its got a crust to it, you can sail across the top of it just don't stop moving.
Also got looking about for a larger front tire setup for the S. Not sure what it fits, but ITP make a steel replacement rim for a 4/115-130 rim in an 10x8 witha 3/5 offset. Cheng shin make a s newer tire, lightfoot, I saw it at Denniskirk, in a 25x11and a 24x11 for a 10 inch rim in addition to a 23x10 and a 23x8. Figure this should work up front if I space the rim off the hub a inch. Wish i could find a mounted dimensions for cheng shin tires some place to double check as right now its still a gamble.
I guess some pics are in order
