82? 250r?

Im ganna check this out sometime soon, ill probably buy it looks reall good. Guy says it runs but smokes like crazy and need a top end rebuild. How much would it cost to rebuild the top end. Im ganna snatch it up for 300$. Then im ganna need a pipe for it. WHat are your guys experience with these? Is there a plastic tank that will fit? Are they fast? The only vid ive seen of one seem like it was slow. But i dont know here some pics. He says its all original. How much does it look to be ebay worth or street worth thanks.

I know of another one in fair condition just needs coil and hand grips for 200$.
Is it an 82?
The other one is the same year also.
I want to get it but its hard to find a way to bring it to my house, i need a truck. but i want to go check it out tommrow to make sure it just the rings are bad. He says it smoked real bad, and doesent idle but it does run? i want to hear the engine for any noises.

Ok cool , i dont like the look to much but if i were to get this now i could probbly keep it with my freinds on there quads. The dx aint doing it.

my freinds have one suzuki LT-R450 QuadRacer 2006 ,fuel enjected, cherrybomb electrical thing, no baffle, or air box lid.

The other is a polaris Predator 500 with 2 stage uni, no baffle, or air box lid.

Think this r could keep up with a pipe jetted and uni filter?

depending on the mods (if any) done to the R you wont be completly left in the dust, but your not going to get behind them to bad, get a 300 kit for it and let it ripp! its deffinitly a step up from what you have now.

Cool cool, i wish i could get a 85 model though.

Id probably look into an extended swinger for it and some low pros for the rear and a taller skinner tire in front to give it a nice mean look.

why is it over powerd?? the 300 is a really easy motor to ride, very smooth power. also trax your not going to put a taller front tire on that rag as it has a wide front wheel, you will have to swap out the front end for a 200x or 83-84 R front end to get the skinnier tire, personally I would get better rear tires, exahust/airfilter/jetting and ride the F out!

The 82 250r is a little bit better in the suspension department than the 225.

Yea i know, i wouldent even be bothering if it was more than 300, cause im trying to get a car and this money is from my car money, and well the only reason im considering is cause i dont go to the dunes anymore with my freinds cause i cant keep up and the dx is just embarising in the sand. so im thinking this will atleast get me up some hills and throw some dirt.

Thanks guy but my budget is sorta broke after i buy it. So its like a project, I might just replace rings no hone or bore or whatever depends on what he cylinder looks like.

Well see its like a short stubby look to it im thinking like a +3 swinger to give it some look. Also he seems like a smart guy and knows what he talking about so im sure it needs a top end. Also im only 17 so money is not plentyfull, and i dont have a car nor truck, and the people i know who have one work all day from like 7am to 7pm so its kinda hard.

Man look how original that thing is.Those may even be the factory rears tires.You never see a seat that good on an 82.Id buy that in a minute ,keep it and sell the yamaha. .40-50 bux for a bore and 40 or 50 for a piston on ebay then a few more bucks for a gasket set and your ready to go.If you put a taller tire on the front and flat tracks on it ,you will have a wheelie machine.Probably be pretty hard to ride.It may be ok with a whole 200x front end on it.

Well is its so original gys want to trade meh? Anyways because IF i were to roll it which happens every once in awhile i dont want to dent the tank. ALso i want it to be badass i mean its an R but looks like a big red, get what i mean i want to go fast, jump, race, donuts, you know fun stuff not putt putt around on it. but thanks for all your responses guys.

I dont plan to part it. But i get what your saying. Also for the advice above i tried to sell the old yami for 500$ and noone showed any intrest. Maybe where im located but not even an email, or anything so its kinda hard to sell it. Id rather have it sit there then go for lower then 500 cause its perfectly fine nothing wrong.

Yea well in a couple hours im ganna check it out, if i like it explain to him that i cant pick it up now but if he holds it for me i could ask my brother to borrow his truck to snatch it up but he is rarely home and is not the gernerous type so who knows. Well see though ima check it out for sure.

Don't jump to that conclusion too quick, the silencer may be all gunked up with 2 stroke oil soot and need a repacking, that can rob a lot of power and turn a machine from what used to be a mountain lion in to a pussy cat mighty quick....meow, meow

Usually all any after market pipe does is shuffle the powerband around and where you gain in one area you lose in another.

Man if I had a plastic tank id trade for that one in a minute.You know they raced these 250r in the baja races.They arent as good as the 85-86 but they will eat up the 225. Sling that 225 on ebay of you want to get rid of it ,it should bring over 500,it looks like some of the nice ones are going for around 700.I just bought one today for 300 and its going to ebay when I get it cleaned up.

Well i picked it up today all mine for 300$. Its in really nice condition. The guys says he was the original owner. It has new tires no cracks in plastic, little rip in sit quater size ding in tank, shocks are all tight new chain. Lights work and it looks really good. I rode it to put it away and it starts first kick but smokes as of i had seafoam in the gas and has the power of a goped. I can rest my foot on the kicker and it will slowly go down so i think it does need rings. Guy says he ran it at 20:1? Does that sound good for las vegas weather? Also where can i get rings for cheap? I gann take the head off wensday and take pics for you guys to tell me if it need a bore, cause im basicly broke and if it doesent need it then heck. Its all original, even has the took kit under the seat. I only got a bill of sale cause the thought he had the title but it was to his 85r.
Im happy with it but i would trade anyday for an 85 or 86r. Anyways ill get some pics of it with a wash and the head.

He says he got it in cali of the show room floor.
Everything is excellent condition and the only flaws are a ding in tank little rip on seat (in corner).

there are those cheap enough for you. They sure are a good deal if you can use stock size.Pull off the head and look for numbers om the piston to see if its on the stock bore.Those 6.00 rings might get you by until you can come up with about 100 or so to bore it and get a new piston.

I got a new dg silencer off ebay pretty cheap keep looking onthere for what you need.

Get you some good 2 stroke oil at your local shop like klotz r50 or amsoil or belray something like that and a ratio rite oil measure and run it at 40 to 1 or so and that thing will run alot better

Yea the pictures are in my other thread called 250r piston pics. Yes i go to sams all the time on decator i think, or rancho. Yea he is a great guy and i was ganna take him my head and piston and get his personal opinion on it. He is a great guy and is willing to help alot. I have gone to him for jets and other parts, he has the microfinches things for the atc its pretty cool. heres the link to the pics.

My 81 is fast enough for me. As far as the smoking, you do know it is a 2 stroke right? Maybe the mix is off. When I got mine it smoked like Ron White, but after that tank of gas was gone it was ok. I wouldn't think twice about picking it up, the susspention isn't that great on them though.

Sam says to run it at 20:1 also... but I am not comfortable with it... mine gets really loud so I backed off to 28:1... it seemed to help... takes a while to warm up, but theres something to be said for not running my pride and joy lean.

Well i leaned up on it yesturday at 30:1 or even a little lower and it dident smoke to much anymore but was way underpowered wouldent rev up high and bogged. Also wouldent idle.
Look i know its a 2 stroke i know they smoke, but not so bad that it will cover you up in 20 secounds.
