The 1983 Big Red did not have reverse. The little shaft you are referring to is the High/Low I think. Is there an H and L on the cases by it?

I have an 83 (chain drive). The red lever is the high/low switch. The 84's and on were shaft driveand had reverse.

no, it has the hi/low switch, this is lower on the case , ti looks like a 3/8 splined shaft (rough guess)

That is for the neutral indicator. There should be a little plastic piece on there that points to a "N" when the trike is in neutral.

The plastic piece pulls off easily, it's missing on all but one of
my trikes .

The plastic Neutral indicator should have a "c" clip holding it in place. Many of these get taken off when people pull the pull starters off, then get misplaced and or lost and never put back on. I went to my local ATV salvage yard and bought a bunch of these - one for each of my machines that was missing them. they should be available thru service honda - or bikebandit as well for a very minimal price.

In some of my old 3 wheeling magazines, I see they used to make reverse kits for the ATC200E big reds - but I have yet to see one surface since I have been on the boards.
