I need some help with this heap before I totally loose my mind. I believe it's an 85 dressed up as the black and red model (85 1/2 I believe) anyways... Where is the overflow bottle supposed to be located on this thing. I think mine is missing. Also... besides the motor being pretty much toast, can you take a closer look at some of the pics I'm going to post to see what else might not be there.. Or if someone can post some good pics of thiers so I can compare. I know the airbox and shrouds aren't in the pics. Thanks for the help.

Those are pretty much all of the close up shots I have on my computer right now.

And I am going to assume that thing you are holding is a boost bottle? Just a guess.. judging from how it goes straight into the intake.

A few more pics to help identify some problems.. OK obviously I'm missing the overflow..
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e137/chrisr200x/trizrestore082-1.jpg
Is there supposed to be some sort of exhaust hanger (the mounting point doesn't quite line up? Also.. do 2 stroke pipes have a header gasket like a four stroke?
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e137/chrisr200x/trizrestore079.jpg
one last pic...
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e137/chrisr200x/trizrestore086.jpg

for those of you that don't know.. this is my first two stroke so I'm not to familiar with them. As well as it being held together with zip ties.. I'm missing alot of bolts and fasteners and such.. So I don't know what exactly is there or in the right place or not.

Chris,

the only thing i notice is that the cylinder is 38W and that is definelty 85 numbers. I think the best chance to identify 85 or 85 1/2 is the headlight plastic. Is it painted with yellow underneath or black original plastic. The only other thing might be the sequence numbers on the VIN - compare to someone elses 85 1/2. Also the numbers on the engine should be similar to the VIN - so you can see if the motor is original to the bike.

With the yellow shock i see in the pics, i am thinking just an 85 with black plastics? But any of these parts can be replaced over the years.

Ok chris,

Most people just use a hella lot of high temp rtv sealer, the orange stuff and goop the hell outa the pipe and shove it on there. Z's are known for there leaks. Your overflow bottle is right underneath your plastics on your rear, but im having a hell of a time finding a pic.

Yes. there is yellow paint under the black on both the frame and the headlight shell. this leads me to believe it's an 85. I don't have the motor here (sent away to be rebuilt) but I can get the numbers off the frame... but my guess is that is an 85.

I don't have a clear pic of the front of the frame and radiators.. but is there supposed to be some sort of deflectors or a guard on up on the front of the radiators?

radiators have a plastic louver thing in the front of each. From the pics, it looks like you have them. No screens or anything like that.

Buy an oem exhaust mount for the pipe hanger. The pipe holds on with just spings attached to the cylinder, a small gasket inside and use rtv to seal it up. So that mount in the middle is pretty important.

The RTV works good for a season, then do it again.

thank you sir! This thing really needs alot of attention.

I wouldn't of even known about the overflow but I noticed it here in the pics posted in this thread

http://www.3wheelerworldforums.com/showthread.php?t=64897

but how come that one is mounted on the downtube and there are some mounted up on the gastank? where the heck do I even find one and where does mine go?

I dont know if you noticed(pretty sure you did)but your gear shifter is missing

the yellow spring gives it away as a 85

the 86s had that style overflow bottle. Its no more than a threaded hole on the frame gusset right there to mount that type (square). You need the 85 style that mounts in the rubber bushings on the front of the gas tank - snug with the intake tube. The 86 style overflow bottle is rare to find anyways.

I do not know why yamaha changed the location of the bottle - i personally think it was for accessability.

it's a 85 for shure, the front rim and hub and the rear shock give it away..
all 85's and 85 1/2 have 38w on the motor vin and the frame vin, the 10 digit in the vin should be a F. thats a diffrent pipe than the first pic....was that a trick? yes its missing the mount inbetween the frame and pipe. 86 frames are the only ones that had the overflow on the side of the frame.
Its missing the mount and strap for the boost bottle, top motor mounts, chain rollers ,Shifter, overflow bottle, clutch cable holder, chain saver ,gas tank pan,air box, shrouds, front fender, rubber gromets for air box cover, bottom motor mount bolt, fuel pump is off something else...retaining washer for the front sprok..

Do you want to get rid of it?????????:D

  sheesh... you make me sorry I asked. I probably would of if I knew this before I sent the motor out.. I got more into the motor already than I paid for the wheeler. Looks as if this one is gonna be a long, drawn out, bank account draining process... I knew I shoulda stuck with honda! :D

The motor was pretty much a basket case eh... From broken cases to a bent rod etc... I'm thinking when it's all said and done somewhere between $600- $800. But I figure at least everything in there will be fresh so that's a good starting point. :wondering

thanks for the help guys... :)

I got a grand in each of my bottom ends.. But thats completely replaceing everything and labor. I saved on the labor part because i did it myself, But thats what it would have cost if outsourced. So your pretty close on your figureing.

Yeah Bryan,,, Shawn could answer the question as to what is going on with my motor better than me. The bottom end has some issues with the clutch and broken cases but I really couldn't say at this point what's going on. I think pretty much by the time it's all said and done most everything will be new.

I got a coolant bottle within an hour of posting over on .org. It seems like I'm really not having a problem gathering parts.. it's just finding out exactly what i need first.

chris's engine will have new, wiesco piston on fresh bore 80 over, wiesco hot rod, main bearings, complete engine gasket and seal kit, shift shaft, misc. clips and little parts that were missing, shifter, boyseen reeds, all case bolts will be stainless along with a billet impellar. it also should have a good basket in place of the grooved one. i fixed a few cracks and dings that were in the cases that i'm useing. now i'm just waiting for the rest of the parts from yamaha to come in so i can start putting it togther. i am also going to be polishing a few parts, and painting the rest black(unless hes changed his mind:wondering )

Her is a pic Chris. The tri-z one is in this pic,but if it is hard to find, you can make a banshee hanger work. They are easy to find. You may have to slot the mounting hole on the tri-z pipe to get the banshee hanger to fit.You could also get billet ones for the banshee and some I have seen are adjustable.

I do not even know if they are still available from Yamaha,But if you go to a junkyard,Banshee ones are laying all over the place. They also go in sets of 2 on ebay pretty cheap for the banshee. They fall apart from time to time so getting 2 would not be a bad idea.
