I just got a 1985 250R headlight and installed it on my 200X. With a little ingenuity it fits nice and looks good. I am having a problem with the bulb though. When it is on it is verry dim and even the tail light is dim. Am I drawing too much current? Is this a bad bulb? (I will check this later today) What should I do to get this light fixture working on this machine?

Thanks

PS: I will get some picts just as soon as I figure out how to get them off my phone.

lol the lighting coil is not strong enough i think , atleast thats what i was told when i tried to light up the headlight on my 200xauto , the 200s coil cant handle the bigger bulb wattage

That's fine, What bulb can I put in the fixture to make it work?

If it's too much bulb........try one with a 35 watt rating.
I think they still make em, in that style of bulb.

Be real careful with the 200X 83 to 85. They have no voltage regulator, and I'm certain that the bulb resistance is matched to the lighting coil output.

You may ruin a nice bulb if your not careful. You may also be able to add a voltage regulator to it to keep it regular.

Another possability id rewinding the lighting coil, there really isn't much to it.

Can someone else please chime in to this 200X lighting problem we've all dealt with??

This is all good info, I'll check the original bulb for the resistance and check on the voltage regulator. I have a goki electric starter and no way to charge the batt. so maybe I should be looking into the rewiring option.

How do the guys that put the 350X dual light do it?

Maybe the easiest is to just cut the back side of the holder and make it hold the original bulb.

I will make a "How to" with picts when I get all this done!;)

As long as your "how to" isn't just mounting and wiring it - but getting it done right, it would be great...

Truth is, I have a spare 350X headlight I want mounted on an older 200X. I want to know what has to be done to get it all right without the risk of burning out those expensive bulbs.....

Yep, thats easiest but I'd rather have it fully explained to me what the deal is and what has to be done to improve/modify the stock 83-85 200X.

We get motors rewound all the time at my job so if I know what needs to be done, I'm sure I could drop off my lighting coil at the motor house. Then I'm Aassuming I'll just need a voltage regulator.

Well, after doing a little investigation I found the bulb wass bad. But it was a 60/100 Watt and the 200x bulb is a 60 watt so instead of buying a bulb and finding out that wouldn't work I did this.

It may not be right but it works perfect!:beer

I took the picts with my phone so sorry if they didn't come out the best.

I took out the original bulb ring and trimed it with a small grinder.
then, trimed the fixture the same way.
made small cuts in the fixture and roled over the edges.
and finaly I put a small amount of JB Weld on three spots in the ring and fixtrue.

What was your process...is the 250r headlight ALL 250Rr parts or is it a 200x light with just a 250r shroud and strap mounts?

It's all 250r for now. Haven't addressed the bulb issue. Have to get the engine running for that. Proabably see what bulb a 200s takes (my donor motor) and go from there.

According to the chart - 83-85 200x use the same bulb as 81-86 250R

Dennis Kirk has the bulbs for the 350x for 3.99 a pair.
