I got my 85 250r, first 2-stroke atc I've ever owned. I'm a 4 stroke guy. I got 100 octane and mixed it 20:1 with Yamalube. After reading a lot of other threads though everyone seems to mix their oil at 33:1 or somethin like that. Has the oil advanced that much or is it the brand of oil everyone runs? Is yamalube ok or is their a better oil.(I dont need high performance racing oil, just somethin to putter me around.) Also how can I know if I'm safe to mix it leaner without burnin somethin up?
Thanks

you can get an idea about your mixture by looking at your plug if its dry youre lean, wet black youre rich, and milky gray youre just right. 20:1 sounds awfull rich to me i'd run 32:1 and rejet from there.

I guess i'll give the 32:1 a try. There is an oem sticker on my frame that says 20:1 so I wasn't sure. The more oil I add to the gas would that make me run richer or more lean. Thanks

You'd probably be best off with Bel-Ray MC1 synthetic @32:1. I used that for years with good results before switching to Maxima Castor 927.
Dammit!

With any of the high quality synthetic oils you can run leaner than 20:1. Klotz, Blue Marble etc all can run safely up to 52:1 (assuming you're jetted right). I've even heard of people running 100:1 but that's pushing your luck imo. I run Klotz Super-techniplate at 40:1 personally.
Blue Marble Oil @ 50:1 is the boss www.bluemarblestore.com

I am running 40:1 Amsoil Dominator with stock jetting for 6000 feet.
Been running it 40:1 since top end rebuild in Feb 06.
No problems at all.

100 to 1 in stock 250 Tecate motor, stock jetting.
This was a new plug I put in before a recent ride last Saturday. About 7 hours of run time on it.
The pics make it look better then it is. I am either going to 120 to 1 or play with the jetting a bit. Still got black oily goo dripping out the tail pipe and get about 10 hours per plug. Maybe go to hotter plug perhaps,,,, not sure yet.
Sure seems to run good though.

Crankshafts/Bearings dont last very long on 100:1 oil ratios. If you are going to run this ratio, you need to decrease your stock jet sizes (smaller) to clean up the jetting.
Rusty, yamalube is a very good oil. Alot of the factory roadracing teams use it, 20-24:1 is a good oil mixture

I run Amsoil synthetic at 40:1/50:1 depending on the fuel. Higher octane, I run leaner...lower octane, richer. Oh, in a stock internals 86 250R.

Lately I've switched to Bel-Ray H1R at 32:1 and so far I really like it. Burns clean at that mix ratio.

Like the infinite amount of threads before this one, Blue Marble, at 50:1 in everything I own with zero problems.

I gotta say I never thought name brand quality oil would make my bike faster or run better. I went from thin watery Suzuki oil, the cheapest stuff I could find; to Maxima Castor 927. My bike is quicker, no oily residue and it smells like the track races with that sweet smell. I will stick with quality name brand oils like these guys say. They do indeed work better then lower quality brands.
