I got the 86 200X to where I could safely run it. Turns out that the motor is very smooth and quiet running and very quick! I can see all new green gaskets on the cases but have no idea whats been done to this motor.
My 85 200X is jetted with a Cobra pipe and moves pretty darn well, this 86 flat out smokes it, with a stock exhaust an an airbox lid in place. Not just on top in 6th gear but everywhere, the 86 just pulls and pulls.
Was the 86 just that much better than an 85 200X or I wonder if this motor got a HC piston and or cam. I don't know how to tell unless I start taking things apart and the motor is tight so I'm not touching it. I'll see if it's jetted when I clean the carburetor out.
Anyone who owns an 85 200X would simply love the 86. It seems so much smoother than the 85 model. The downside is that the parts are harder to come by. Give me 6 months or maybe longer but I'm gonna keep this and I'll find as many swaps as I can that are fuctional, newer and trick.

Thats what I like to hear dirtcrasher! I plan on selling my 85 soon and buying an 87 that a guy I know has stashed away... I am also very interested to see what parts interchange, the more the merrier!!

whoaa.. timing ADVANCE? i thought the timing was preset and unchangeable??? hmmm... could timing be the reason my valves rattle no matter how i adjust them, and why the kickstarter kicks back ~ once every 10 starts??? hmmm..

Dirtcrasher that's why I love these 86/87 200x's I'm currently putting my highly modified tc racing engine together. this thing should flat out haul 350x carb, largest exhaust possible, and ported as large as a 350x head plus dual plugs so all the fuel burns just a week or so and I should be scooting

There is a world of difference between the two. My 86 would smoke my 84 stock and with the Lifan engine. The 86 was my cousins and eveytime we went riding there was not much competition. Thats why I ended up getting it from him.

check your compression relief cable is working correctly I had a 86 (long gone now) that did this. with the cam modified slightly it would fire pre maturely and about break my leg after adjusting the compression relief correctly it quit doing this

I'll see if it's jetted when I clean the carburetor out.Maybe it has aftermarket, high compression, ported carburetor jets?

I think the main difference is a slightly larger bore??? and I know the stroke was increased from 57.8 mm IIRC to 60 mm. Maybe the CDI has a better performing spark curve? Also consider the difference in gear ratios from 5 speed vs 6 speed. Also says new larger intake valve and valve timing for more torque. Here's the pic I'm getting the info from.
