View Full Version : Valve Checking a 200X

I've been screwing with the same '84 200x since august '06, and it always runs really well, but it idles high (not lean or rich) or when I set the idle speed lower, it doesn't want to idle, or it idles for 15 seconds then dies off. I have the pilot jet stock, 112 main with cobra exhaust and K&N. The pilot screw is set 2 1/4 turns out. I bought another 200x carb from someone on 3WW that came off of a 200x running, "spot on." So, I thought to myself, it's gotta be the valves. I gapped the valves to .003, and still no change. Now I'm wondering if the valves are bad, warped or broken. I do not know how to check these, but I've seen a head cover taken off to check the valves on a Honda Rebel. Is there a valve cover to take off to check this?, or is there an easier way. I just want a good running trike to ride! Please help me if you have any suggestions.

i'd bet its still in your jetting or a leaking intake boot.

it's not the jetting, I'm 100% positive. But could it really be a leaky intake boot? The bike isn't running lean like there's a leak though. How could I check for that? are you talking about intake from the filter to the carb, or the carb to the cylinder?

spray something like carb cleaner or starting fluid arount the intake when its running and see if it revs up.If it does you have a air leak

you might also want to put a tach on it to see where the idle is.The manual says 1,300 +- 100 rpm idle speed.

When you guys say intake, are you talking about the backend of the carb, or where it connects to the cylinder?
where it contects to the cylinder that intake carb to cylinder

So I tried spraying WD40 and starter fluid on the intake boot, and there wasn't a noticable differencein the idle speed. But when I was looking over the bike, I noticed that my full system cobra exhaust was loose where the header connects to the muffler. I can wiggle it around some and it does not have a clamp on it to seal it. Could this be the fix to my problems? Tomorrow I'll take off the muffler, and cut a slit in the muffler, then get a hose clamp to seal it off. I'll let you know the results as soon as I fix this problem.

So I clamped the exhaust leak, and no change. I then checked the valves by tipping the bike on it's front and back ends, and poured some gas through the exhaust and intake ports, and the gas levels didn't go down, so the valves are still good. I can't figure out what's wrong with this bike, it just won't idle where it's supposed to. I checked the compression, and I got about 30lbs low at 115-120. I haven't checked it warm though, so maybe the rings are bad. Who knows. If any of you guys have any ideas or similar problems, please let me know, I would love to keep this bike, but at the rate it's going, it's up for sale at $900 obo

Leaking crank seals or cylinder baase gasket will lean it out, also. Might be time for a leak down test.....

Definately sounds like an air/fuel mixture issue.

Sorry, had 2-strokes on the brain. Fixeruper, don't quit on it. If you put a primo carb on it and still have problems, if it isn't air/fuel, maybe a clogged muffler? It sounds like air/fuel, though.

Just checked the muffler and headpipe, and I can see through both without any clogs or something that would plug it. What else? Keep 'em coming.

how do I do a leak test on the base gasket?

A leak down test is not applicable in your situ. I was thinking of a 2-stroke. Did You use the new carb slide or the old one? Sometimes the idle screw will put dents or wear spots on the slide, but probably not what is causing your problem.

Yeah, I changed the slide, thanks for the tip though. Any more ideas guys? I'm desperate.

Top o the day, look in the carb, pull out your slide, check the needle for sloppy movement or spring clip missing, check the slide to see if it is botteming properly, 2 each '85 200x originals, Do have 110 to sell,, In Vegas
