Saturday I started my 1986 250r restoration. I would have more blasted parts if the water valve had not blown out of the bottom of the moisture trap. Cheap china harbour freight tools.
Frame was sandblasted, epoxy primed and painted all done Saturday. I polished one fork tube on Sunday (no pics yet). I will update this thread as I progress.

Here are some pics of polishing aluminum fork sliders. The first couple show the rough aluminum casting. The next couple shots show the sliders after they were DA sanded with 220, then wet sanded with 600. In the pics you can see the pits or holes left over that need to be sanded further to get the mirror finish (by the mounting bracket and caliper mounting holes). These will require more elbow grease as I do not have a dremel. Last couple pics show what I did on Sunday on the right side slider. This was DA 220, 600 wet, 1000 wet then buffed on a bench grinder with a rouge and then a polish. However I am not done yet with it. If you look by the square plate that helps hold the front axle you will see where the finish is still rough. Lots of work but as someone told me "it is all about the details".
sweet MIKE!! IM going to be starting on my 83 painting it up nice!! and polishing parts on it!! so this is going to be you nice rider??

This will end up the dreaded trailer queen. I wont ride other than to verify mechanically sound. It will sell after build if I can get the right price, as I have more frames and want to build a 500r. It is going to suck not to ride this one, but how much more fun to ride a 500. :naughty:

Looks really nice so far! Can I ask what shade of red you used on the frame? and how does it match up to the factory plastic?
Will be nice when done, keep the pics coming.

It is Dodge 2005 red. There are 2 reds for dodge in 2005 one flame red and this one. This was using a brand called Matrix. It is nice to use as the mix is 1:1. As far as paint matching plastics, all my oem plastics are still in wrappers and I have yet to remove them. It matches very well to my 85 plastics which are in great shape.
Sweet man. I'm getting a local shop to sand and powdercoat my frame as soon as i have extra money. I love the forks dude, i'm gonna try that too. I'll let y'all know how it turns out

Polishing is just time consuming and the details are a pain without the right tools. I spent another 3.5 hours last night trying to finish the right side slider. I need to order some of those attachments for the hard to reach areas.
Yea i know what you mean. i spent 3-4 hours last night on just one and i never even got to polishing yet, that was just to even it all up and get the pits and scratches out. maby another 2 hours and i'll have it polished. Let you know how it turns out.

I started this resto and then had to prioritize projects and finished the half complete Harley sportster build. I "finished" it last Friday and got back on the 86r. The frame in the first post is one I am going to keep for myself. I bought the one in the pic below last November. I took it on a group ride and it died. It was complete but needed everything. I spent 4.5 hours between Saturday night and Sunday a.m. stripping to the bare frame. NOT a single stripped bolt, even the swingarm bolt came out with minimal effort. I then proceeded to blast prime and paint the swinger. Clear coated it last night. In the second to last pic the farthest frame is the one in the first post of this thread. The middle one is the disassembled one and the closest is one I am going to use for a 500 conversion (an extra). The frame has had some welding by the front motor mounts so is a great candidate. I will continue to update as I go along.

I sandblasted the frame and then applied some epoxy primer. The first picture sucks but that is a bare steel frame. The next couple are of the primed frame.
This weekend the red goes on. I will then re-install the swingarm and start on the little parts.

Why don't restore projects ever show evidence of running? These bikes ARE meant to run, right?

I will see if it runs this weekend. Dont you mean evidence of being ridden? It is not being ridden yet......Cause its lacking a fuel valve, fuel line, spark plug wiring harness, the right side threads on the axle need to be re tap'd..dont want the wheel and tire to fall off :) , new throttle cable, primary fluid, bleed the rear brakes, foot pegs need to be painted, cutch cable adjusted, air filter and finally..............Glamis dune season does not start until Halloween. :( This gives me plenty of time to get it right.

I Installed OEM fork boots, re-polished the fork sliders, refinished the thumber, fuel valve, upper brake line guide, and clutch perch/handle, brake handle. I put some gas in the tank kicked it about 5-6 times and it came to life.... I put it in first and went on a long ride to the end of the driveway  Since these pics I have installed a mint tank (thanks Dammit) carb overflow lines, engine breather lines, refinished clutch cover bolts and remaining hardware, and adjusted the parking brake/clutch cable....so the Trailer Queen is done! :D Time to move on to another project :beer

hey I was wondering what did you use for the swingarm and how durable is it? Is that powdercaot or paint. Whatever it is it looks much glossier and smoother then OEM. Was going to anodize mine back to its gold color, too much effort. Plating bolt is already enough for me hehe. I would love some tips and pointers. My restoration project hasnt gotten off the ground for 2 years. Stipped a spare frame.. painted it . didnt like it. powdercoated it myself and baked it with a heating lamp. the smooth areas came out beautiful, but there are rough spots where the powder didnt fully cure. so maybe ill sand and paint over the powder coat. spent $$$ urethane on a paint match for the engine cases. Turned out a little darker then the original finish :(. Oh.. brused fork legs?.. I hear a flap wheel will give it a uniform finish.

It is paint, urethane BC/CC probably the clear and the prep work that makes it look so shiny and smooth? :wondering

With this dinosaur:
http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk179/miked1957_photo/DSC_1664.jpg
Not sure on durability as this one is a trailer queen. However I have used the same paint on rocker covers, primary cover and other ATV/ Harley engine parts with great durability.
Powder is the preferred choice on this board from what I read, I dont do powder as I dont have an oven and I am set up to paint. If I had the room and some extra dough I would look into powder. I polished the forks, but yes they were more brushed from the factory. I sand them with 220 and up.....finishing with 1500 or 2000 and then polish them up. One could follow up with a semi gloss clear or powder to get the correct OEM finish. All I can think of for now!!!
very nice job mike as always! HIGH WHEELIES!
Thanks Bro, hope all is going well!!!
