Hey guys,

My riding/hunting partner brought over his 1984 ytm 200 EL shaft drive today for some repairs. Of course we have some questions that you might be able to help us with.

first of all the trike has a clicking noise in the rear end , hard to tell where from. but it seems to me its either in the axle housing or the shaft/final drive area.
its a very consistent click, in gear or not, riding or turning by hand, one tick per revolution,

we drained the gear oil, only about a half cup came out and it has metal dust in it. They changed the oil not long ago, say 2 mo.
Looked through the fill hole and saw some marring/ wear on the teeth of the large gear.

How do we get the axle off? I didn’t want to beat the crap out of it but the manual says to hammer it out, hitting on the shaft side end of the axle... we did this and it didn’t budge.

The manual also says not to attempt to dismantle the final drive... too many specialty tools.

When we go to take the final drive housing off of the frame, will it slide right off of the shaft?

Any guess as to what this prob might be / what we might look into??

Thank you!!

Get another Castle nut you don't want and put that on there to hammer on.

"How do we get the axle off? I didn’t want to beat the crap out of it but the manual says to hammer it out, hitting on the shaft side end of the axle... we did this and it didn’t budge.

You have to remove at least one threaded collar from the shaft side of the bearing carrier before you can remove the axle. If I remember correctly, you can remove the axle once the collar(s) are removed.

I wouldn't beat on the end of the axle very aggressively. The threaded end has holes in it to allow for a cotter pin. This makes it very weak. You can easily ruin the end of the axle. Thread a nut on the axle until it is flush with the end of the axle. Tap on the nut with a rubber/plastic mallet.

The manual also says not to attempt to dismantle the final drive... too many specialty tools."

I didn't have any choice. Mine was dis-assembled when I got it. If you don't have much experience as a mechanic; find someone experienced to help you. Just be careful. Make sure you put all of the spacers and washers back in the correct positions.

The manuals only help so much. Most of it will be common sense to an experienced mechanic.

well, we removed the entire axle housing and tore down the final drive stuff and this is what we found... the small gear in there is completely screwed. teeth chipped and some broken completely off. one was lodged into the vent hole in the caseing.
the large one gear is ok.. should clean it up (sharp edges). the housing is damaged but... perhaps it can be repaired.

is there any possible way one can get the small gear alone???? wish I knew what it was called. or will we have to go for the entire rear assembly?

thanks !!

You may still be able to get some of the parts from bikebandit.com in the OEM section, but watch ebay (or post in 3ww) classifieds and search for anyone who has a good diff lying around, or someone parting out a YTM. Bikebandit is pretty good for breaking down the parts with their online microfishe and ordering system. I have bought a lot of parts from them. Good luck.

I would just get a used rear end. You should be able to find a whole assembly alot cheaper then getting the parts new (if they are available).
