does the 1981 250r cyl have to be plated or can it just be bored?

All of the Honda 250R's (81-86) have boreable steel cylinder liners.

I think, but I can be wrong, that the first year Honda plated their cylinders was in 1997. I got a 1997 cr250r and the cylinder was nikasil plated.
