are these tires good for flat track? http://www.maxxis.com/products/kart/product_detail.asp?id=131
NEGATIVE!
look in the new pro and development for my flat track tire listing
you can also use a 18x8.5x8 lawn mower tire to get started as they are kinda cheap and available at wall mart if need be

The turf tires -lawn mower type with low blocked type tread works great. I can't find these in a 9" for stock honda rims but there available commonly for 8" and sometimes 10". Matt

Yes if they are the low profile turf savers they will work really good.

Hows the hook up with the lawn mower tires? Are they real hard so you slide everwhere?

They are hard, and you will probably spin out with them if your not careful but I'd take my chances vs $90 a pop for tires until you've atleast tried racing and are sure you'll like it. I'm not positive that when I wear out my current tires I wont just get a pair of these (turf savers) and run them.

Haha yea I don't want tobe spinning everywhere but 90 bucks a pop is steap... I might be able to get some take offs though cheap or free so that would help me out for the next season, Im on the hunt for 10x10 wheels right now for them, we'll see

The turf savers only come in 8inch rims, so if you want to run them don't get 10s!

I always thought you would want some slide. I would classify my racing style as a "drifter"....get the wheels spinning and drift aroung the turns. The quads drive around the turns, buy I have not had much luck doing that. So, in that respect, I would prefer a harder tire. Just my opinion though. I think I paid $50 for my tires total at a local ATV shop.

ChrisD,
That make two of us. Trying to corner like you're on a go-kart will slow you down.
I've been guilty of pitching it sideways real early in the turn. Good forward traction and little sidebite is what I'm after.
you want a controlled slide, not spinning and sliding to much only ehough to keep decent speed through the curves, these new american racers help to do just that, before I was spinning wildly and loosing TO much speed, A trike CAN stick through a turn, if you have the right tires for it. Also it makes you competitive, If you guys raced me and billy now and you had lawn mower tires, it woudl be 2 races, me and billy and you guys amoungst yourselves.

I want slide, I dont want to slide like I'm on ice without studs, but I want slide. you HAVE to be able to break it loose in the corners, theres no way you can "rail" through the corners on a trike like the quads do. I think the turf savers will work great for that. If you can't break the rear loose to drift through the corner like ChrisD mentioned without working the trike like crazy your fighting a losing battle. You should be able to lean in, flick the throttle and instantly break it loose and keep it that way till your back into the straight. Having to man handle the thing through the corners cause the tires are sticking so good isn't the way to go. I really don't think the lawn mower tires are that bad, infact when the tracks get REALLY sticky its my opinion they would be better then the american racers just because they are a harder compound. The hardest AR tire is still considerably softer then the turf savers.
Maybe I'll run a set at one of the races to prove my point :)

Quads can be set up 2 ways, one is to drive through the corner, I see alot of 450's go this route with the torque they have. The other is sliding where you set the chassis up almost equal in the front with a swaybar. I set mine up to slide so I am at wot until just before the corner, I let off for a second which causes the rear to start sliding, once it starts sliding I'm at wot again all the way to the next corner. The key is to have the right forward bite and the right amount of tire roll so it is not sliding out of control. Once its sliding you should still be able to drive it anywhere in the corner. If you can't go hi or low to pass someone its not controled, your just there for a ride.
Your best bet for tires is to buy a used set to try out but setting up the right tire, tire compound, width, air pressure is different for every track. I bought my rears used for about $80. These tires last alot longer than you think they would. I ran the same set all summer and I run the softest compound, D10. I did have to take the glaze off once and I siped the tires about half way through the season but I can still use the same set for next season.
I checked out a set of those turf savers or whatever they are last night, the biggest prooblem I see with those are how stiff they are. If you grooved them and ground off that shine they have they might work alright but I would pick up a used set of hoosiers or american racers before I tried those. I ran the tri tracks for a couple races and hated them, also to stiff and those were D10 also but they were a shorter tire so I couldn't get the roll I wanted. They also spun way to much.
The only difference between ice and dirt oval is passing, in my opinion, I think its easyer to pass in dirt. I also think the trikes will beat the quads once you get set up correctly, your at a huge advantage as far as weight goes. Look at Chris for example, I bet theres not a quad around that can beat that trike, it should be no different in the dirt. Its not about HP, a lower hp machine that is set up better can outrun a higher hp bike every time. The more hp you have means the more power you have to put to the ground, if your not putting it to the ground its a waste.
I bet I'm at around 45hp if that, and I've beat built banshees, raptors, 450's but I have my bike chassis set up perfect or almost perfect. I've lapped 450's and raptors on a 15 lap race and thats only because of setup.

Same here. WOT to the end of the straight, blip the throttle to get it sliding, then WOT around the turn to the end of the next straight, repeat.!!! Good stuff!!

It all depends on the size of the track and how everything is hooking up. Most the guys i race with run the outside, they dont slide very much at all and keep alot of speed through the turns. Me, most the time i tighten my sway bar WAY up and run the inside line so i can pass. I hook up sooo good compared to everyone elce comming out of the turns its amazing.

It all depends on your riding style, you have to race to suit the way you ride, and i race to win so i do what it takes.

I have a set of 18" turf savers mounted on the 83R right now. They are fun to play around on, but if you ride on grass and mud like I do you wont be getting very far lol. And if the grass is wet it can get realllll slick. But still fun. I might switch back to the 20"s for some traction.
