I need to repack my silencer. I was wondering if the tightness you pack it affects the sound level? Would a loose pack be louder or would a tight pack be louder?
Last time I packed it really tight and was happy with the result, but if I just put like one layer of fiberglass in it what would happen?
Thanks, Chris

im thinking if its not tight in there it will blow around and be blown out or just pack at the back

Yeah if you don't pack it tight, it will do no good and not last as long. Remember when you repack you silencer, it makes a rich condition in your carb from the new performance. Just something to think about.

ok iwondered this question myself when i did mine. i rapped mine tight 2 times around.
i dont know the correct answer. but if it works anything like construction insulation then i would have to say that tight is no good. air is supposed to get trapped and slowed down in the batting/packing. when this happens the sound waves diissipate to a lower level before exiting. when you wrap it tight its like making a tube and the air flows right through.
when i did mine tight i noticed very minimal reduction over the oil soaked previous one. someone should check in with a shop

LD, rich carb with new silencer packing, didn't know that, thanks. I'll pack it tight the way I did before. Chris

I usually put in as much packing as I can, with reasonable effort. I read somewhere that an over-packed silencer was not possible. I have never had any problems on my machines with tight packing, always an improvement over worn out packing. I usually avoid cheapo silencer packing material, it goes away sooner and makes the exhaust stink.

I would think the tighter the quiter as long as its packed fully...more in the same space means higher density and the more dense the more difficult for sound waves to pass threw. But Im talkin out my ass on this one. How do you know when to repack a silencer.

But seriously though i made that up mauahahah.

Roof tar to keep it together? Do you mean on the seem of the fiberglass when you fold it together?
I have to repack mine because I took my trike apart and left the silencer in the rain for several weeks. When I went back to it, it was water logged, better safe that sorry. Chris

Pack it so its wapped tight but not with a stick. You can use some masking tape( blue or white) to help hold the packing around the baffel. As you insert the rapped baffel into the can slowly remove the tape as you stuff the can. I use about 4 raps each time one on each end and two spliting the difference to hold the pack. It seems the more you fuss with the pack the more difficult it is to work with.

How do you know when to repack a silencer.
If your silencer is the repackable type, its just a maintanence duity. Its supose to restore the potential of your muffler. The flow of exhaust from a rebuilt muffler is supose to create more power? then if the muffler was just used over and over with out rebuilding it. Supose to quiet them up a bit I think.

Ok let me rephrase that....how often should you repack?

I think its once every 2 seasions, maybe a little longer. You will hear lots of people on the board mention they are going to re-pack their silencer when the desert seasion starts. Watch in a few months, some folks will get on here and have the same questions.
