I know this subject has been killed more than once.....
I need to rejet my 85 250r and I need to know of there is anyway to try differnet sized jets without spending a grand on all the differnet sizes to only end up using one in the end. The cheapest I have found main jetts is just over 6 bucks a piece.
Or do I need to save my pennies and just hit the nail on the head and buy them all. If I try them one at a time I might find the right one by next winter.
Thanks

I went ahead and bought a 158,155,152 and my 82 R had a 148 when I got it,I put a K&N filter on and made a plexiglass lid for my air box and Im running a 32:1 fuel mix.
Now if it would get above - 0  I might be able to ride and do some plug checks LOL?????
Im new to 2 strokes too!!

jetting in the winter is a pain come spring your gonna have to do it all over again. I pay 250-$3.00 a jet and yes to what darkness said a little rich in the winter is all ways best.

Mods to the best of my knowledge.
FMF Fatty Gold Series w/ fmf silencer
Some custom air intake-exposed filter no box-see pic
Cant find any marks on my reeds, and dont know what oem was.
'86 keihin flatslide carb
Main jet 142
Idle Jet 60
elevation 5280'
20:1 mix (maybe my mix is too rish, but thats what it recommends)
Idles fine, but when you try to give it gas in any gear (except neutral) it put put put huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh put put huhuhuhu.
New plug always comes out wet.
I think I need to downsize my main but dont know what to go by. One size at a time or everyother size....??
F.Y.I. I've gone over the carb several times along with possible plugged air filter and exhaust, and petcock, and all that. Turned the reeds over. The only other thing I can think of is the timing is off. Someone told me that you cant adjust the timing, but what do I know.
Still need a compression test but from what I can tell it is good. Hard to kick over and when riding and I get s spurt of power I gotta hang on.
Does temperature swing make that big a difference?
Where r u finding *Edited**Edited* plugs for $3??
Thanks

Thanks liquid, I'm gonna order some smaller jets today and check my needle and see where that gets me. Are jets something a dealer should have on hand usually?? Are Boysen Power Reeds a good brand?? If so any ideas where to get some new ones. They were a little elevated so I turned them over. Use locktight on the cage screws or....?
Thanks for all your help.

dennis kirk has packs of 5 jets for $20
if you think you need like a 165 main you would get the 160 pack since it goes from 160-168

Thanks Liquid, thats the advice I was lookin for.
I need to get a new ignition coil. I pulled it off today and all the wires are busted. I tried to jerry-rig it back together the best I could but I dont think am getting good contact. In the meantime I'll start on the stuff you said..new reeds, smaller jet sizes, check the sheer pin....
I've tried all the clips on my needle and it only seems to run slightly better on the leanest setting. ( I think it is #1 at the very top right?) But I moved it back down to 2 just to be safe since it doesn't hardly help.
Anyway as soon as I get a new coil I'll let puts the jets in since I want to be sure to have a good contact and let you know.
thanks for the help.

I got the rear end torn apart for new bearings and paint job. I'm ordering parts tomorrow so hopefully I will be riding soon. I'll keep you updated.

Those reeds are aftermarket. They look like Boyesen Power reeds. The best way to see which reed goes on top and bottom is poke them with a screw driver. The one that opens up the easyest is the top reed. Also, if you need to repack your silencer, that will make it even richer with a tight packing. If its the type. I had a .030 over bore with a complete DG exhaust and boyesen power reeds and I was running a 140 main. If your plug checks are wet, lean it out one outa time. If you are bogging on your low end throttle, lean that out also. Sometimes a carb rebuild kit helps because it gives you a stock needle+tapper. Some people change the needle and main jet making it way too rich. Thats how my 250r was when I got it. The worst case would be your carb is giving you problems. Buy a used stock one and get a rebuild kit. That will probably put you at stock. Then adjust from there. I promise you, a stock carb will never steer you wrong. I am prety sure oem reeds had metal stops and metal reeds. Use locktight when taking the reeds off the cage on and off.
would this apply to an 82r with stock reeds? What kind of dofference would it make if i were tp put em upside down? Would it effect revvin up or what? Ir this doesent apply to stock reeds? Thanks.
