About 2 weeks ago I had my Tecate out at the desert, and the engine started making noise so I finely tore into it and found the problem. The cage on one of the ball bearings fell apart and messed up the water pump gear and another gear.

Does anyone know if this is the same engine they used in the Tecate 4? Because if it is I will have a slightly higher chance of being able to get the gears at my local Kawa shop.

Check out some of the debris I found in the case. I tried to get a good pic of the gears but I couldn't get the camera to focus on them but you can still see the teeth are messed up.

I'm sorry to hear of your problems. Not much else ruins a riding trip like breaking your ride. :(

The Tecate 3 & 4 engines are similar but different. The T4 engine is a counterbalanced 6-speed, whereas the T3 engine is a non-counterbalanced 5-speed. Your T3 engine is more closely related to a KX250 engine, than a KXF250 engine. I'm unsure of the interchangeability of the internals on those 3 different engines. You might try looking at BikeBandits part #'s to see if any of the needed parts are used in the other engines.

85 and 86 KX motors are basically the same as 86, 87 T3 Motors, many of the parts are the same, you might get lucky with waterpump bearings for example

Also the later generation KX250 like 90-up are not a hard swap into the 86 Tecate.

Does the KXF motor fit the 86/87 Tecate chassis?

The KXF will not fit without major frame mods if at all due to the counterbalancer.

Curtis.

Thought they may be the same dimensions, thanks.
