I just ordered a Left half case and a gasket kit from service honda and they emailed me back requesting the VIN number of the bike the engine case number of the existing case (thats understandable) and my drivers license number....why do they need the VIN and my drivers license number? That doesnt seem right to me, has anyone else encountered this?

I agree with edog on this one. wtf is up with that? Is this for trike parts or a street bike? not that it matters any. but I would not give out info like that over the internet.

Maybe its the cpsc's way to track you down and take your trike?! :wondering :lol:

guys as far as I understand its an effort to keep people from stealing bikes and buying replacement parts to change the vin numbers around. Kind of a nice idea in my opinion. Yeah kind of annoying but its not that big of a deal. Just reply to the email that you're not comfortable giving that information through email and request a phone number and person you can talk to to exchange that information.

If they want to know the VIN number, then fine. But, they have no buisness in asking for someones drivers license number which in some areas is also your Social Security number.

DL# is often required for credit card transactions. Easy solution. Call them.

I have order 2 new cases from them(both sides) and vin number was never asked. But again, I ordered cases for a 86/87 trx250r and its a common place to order cases for that bike, as many people with 85-89 250r's don't believe in using case savers. They never asked me for a drivers licence number either.

Mines for an 86R too(yeah no case saver). I dont know, I purchase everything online with a CC and have never been asked for this info before. And whos business is it at service honda, and how would they verify, even if the bike was stolen...thats was registration is for (I know the DMV can be fooled quite easily but then so could servicehonda) But as you all suggested, I am going to call them first thing this morning and quiz em about this. Thanks for the input.

They did call me about 1 one of the orders, as I put down 85 atc250r in the order, yet I ordered a 88/89 crank and 86/87 cases and some more 86 parts. I told them, I use 88/89 cranks in mine engines(less cost and better) and 85 and 88/89 cases are discontinued, 85/86 cranks are also discontinued(I refuse to use a hot-rod crank). They looked it up and they confirmed they were discontinued.

I would use a stock crank, hot rods are hit or miss, I had a a hot-rod is lasted awhile, my friend had one, it only lasted like 30 hours on the motor. Another friend used hot-rod cranks, but he rebuilt this bottom ends every 20 hours. I hear too much stuff about them, some last awhile and others don't. Most engine builders will tell you to use oem cranks, and most will tell you the long rod crank, 86 piston w/ spacer plate gives you a softer, less tiring more tractable hit. For drag racing you will want the 85/86 crank, but for trails and mx, 87-89 crank, 86 piston and spacer plate are the way to go.

So just to clear things up, I called ServiceHonda. They told me that honda requires a DL number and VIN number for any STREET bike OVER 300cc. Even though I still dont think that this information at the parts level is going to get anyones bike back or stop anyone from repairing a stolen bike, its makes a little more sense knowing that it's for street bikes.

Bringing back an old thread, but I ordered a crankcase from servicehonda and they gave me a call this morning asking me if I knew but I was at work, is Honda going to know any different if I just give them my drivers license #?

Does Honda keep records of everybody who owns one?
