How do you remove the rear axle from a 86 200x? I am trying to replace the bearings but cannot get the axle off. My main question is: Do you remove both of these bolts?

I have WD-40 Soaking on it now. Any other tips appreciated.

neither you take off that oring on the right of the locknut and then them nuts will slide off then you can hit the axle out to the left

I do not see a snap ring. This is a 86 model, not sure if that makes a difference.

they are left handed threads... just to tell ya....

Are you talking about the ring that sits inside the nut? Thanks for the help guys.

Yep thats where it should be ... just pry it out of there, and then everything else is pretty much self explanitory.

So this is what I am thinking. Is this correct?

Yeah that one is reverse threaded i think. Once you untighten them to the left enough, the snap ring should be exposed. Then you can just pop it out with some pliers. The rest of it should be loose enough to remove and slide off the axle by then.

Thanks! I knew they where threaded opposite, but I cannot get the big one to budge. I will keep working on it. Its making me feel like a big pussy. LOL!

I have used a pipe wrench w/ 3' bar on the end to move those nuts. They can be really hard to remove, heat it up with a Mapp gas torch, it should be somewhat easier to get off.

id use a 15" cresent wrench and a pipe, over a pipe wrench. Heat it up with mapp or carefully with oxy acetilene (spelling is way off). Then wrench on er

I do not have a torch and I have now bent both pairs of channel locks. I will have to go get a new wrench tomorrow. Thanks again for the suggestions.

get a pipe wrench fitting its size, its far stronger than any channel locks.

definitely gotta get a pipe wrench and a pipe.. i used a 3-1/2 foot custom made pipe wrench to get mine off and tighten them back up...

If you can get some real heat (oxy/acet) they will come off with channel locks. Or you can struggle and smash and strip them with a pipe wrench.
Bad thing is that O/A ruins the zinc coating if there is any left.

Buy a Massive Cresent Wrench from TSC they work the best on those axle nuts..and aren't real expensive...

Yes, a large crescent wrench is the best. I use a 17''er and it works fine and can break them free everytime.

I big pipe wrench and my fat $%@ stomping on the end broke it loose. I am so relieved now. Thanks for all of the advice.

good job.. just make sure after you reassemble it, you tighten it up real good... then after every ride.. check it to see if its loose and tighten it.... i had to tighten mine 2 or 3 times...
also check your carrier for cracks...

A 1 5/8 inch wrench will fit it, its kinda loose but it will work. Thats what my dad and I have used for years. Most of the time the nuts will come loose but there have been a few we had to cut off with a torch. As long as you keep the axle cold it shouldn't hurt the threads if it comes down to that. I'm no expert on the 200x but I know all the honda's I've ever worked on use right handed threads on the axle nuts. Just my 2 cents.

If it has never been apart there is a good chance it still has the factory loctite on it. It is also probably rusted on since it is 21 years old. You will need heat and a big wrench. A buddy to hold the bike while you are pulling on the wrench helps also. once you break it free work it back and forth as you loosen it to help clear the threads.

I now cannot get this piece off. It is rusted on. Any tips on getting it loose? Thanks, Adam.

the splines??? uhh i don't think they come off... or atleast i didn't take mine off to pull the axle through.. then again i'm only 15 so don't take my word for it :Bounce
edit:
yeah.. that doesn't come off... i KNOW i didn't pull mine off cause i painted my axle and that piece was still there.. make sure all the nuts are off the axle and tap it out with a piece of wood... keep the AXLE NUT on there so you don't mess up the threads...

soak it with wd-40, then heat it with a propane torch to warm it up a little, use a center punch or block of wood and hit the end of the axle with a hammer(the center punch or block of wood won't damage the threads for the hub nut).
