Has anyone done this?

I just picked up an 85-86 R frame and was thinking of putting a 350x engine in it. I'm not much on pingers anymore, but I sure like the looks of the R.

Would it have better handleing than a standard 350x? What about jumping? Or suspension in general?

Any help would be nice.:beer

the 350x motor is way to tall to fit in ,,, YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF TO BUILD A 350X IF YOU DON'T WANT A 2 STROKE...

Okay that's what I wanted to know.

Kasey, I've got a pretty built X now, but I went riding today and found a nice little jump. After hitting it about 20 times, I came to the conclusion that my X jumps like a brick.

I have already emailed proggresive about a rear spring and fork springs. I'm sure that will help alot, but I just thought the R's suspension would be better overall.

But..if it won't fit, it won't fit. Oh well.

put the r forks and rear spring on that x

that won't work either,,, the pro link spring is way lighter than a 350x spring ,, and since the 350x is heavier the forks wouldn't be an upgrade either,,, diong work to them also,,,

Well, I'm thinking about just building the thing into a "normal" 250r. My riding style has began to change, and I was looking for something with a little better handleing and suspension. I don't have anything against pingers, but when I got my 350x I thought it was a complete upgrade over my TriZ. I guess I could build a 250r and have the best of both worlds.

I don't know if you guys are like me, but sometimes my mind runs a thousand miles an hour with things I think would be cool to do. Anyways, I've been looking on the forums and doing alot of reading and I decided that with the money that it would cost me to build the R from scratch, I could really upgrade the 350x.

On the jump I mentioned earlier, I was probably only five or six feet off the ground, but the landings were hard. Everything bottomed out! Is there anything I can do to my X to get it anywhere near the R? I've emailed Progressive already, but will that be enough?

Well, you can swap the R suspension to the X. We've done it on a couple bikes. The forks ARE a great upgrade, IF you go to Progressive springs in them. You have to swap steering stems in the triples to do it correctly. You can swap in your 250R rear suspension as well with little modification. Do a search on it and see what you find.

Great upgrades for the X!

Thanks Derrick, I will see if I can find it.

yeah i ran a new take off 86 250r shock and linkage on my 250x with a 350x motor....witch weighs more then a atc r and it landed my 40 foot table top no problem with my big ass on it...lol

the 350x would take the r shock the same as the 250x did...you just need to make the lower linkage mount and get a swing arm made.

Kasey,

Do you think the 250R forks would work better on the 350X if they had maybe 15 wt oil and some fork spacers? Or if I did the same mods on a set of 350X forks would they work about the same and better to leave the 350X forks in place??

The R forks are a bit larger and I'd think they would have an advantage over the X...

Well I found an article from the "banned and nameless" on .org about switching out the guts from a 83-84 250r to the 350x. That's what I'm going to do. I'm trying to score some 84 forks on ebay right now. It is supposed to be a stiffer spring and give 1" more travel:naughty: . I also got the email back from Proggresive and they just said they didn't have anything for the rear, nor did they know where to look.:wondering

Also, one down side to switchin the 350x forks with the R is the R is a trailing axel where the X is leading....messes with the rake and handling but I didnt get to ride it for very long.

I have a 350x with a 85/6 R tripples and all, and honestly the handleing on it is perty good, after a while you get used to it and like it. It rakes the front end out.

For the rear Works will rebuild it and everyone i talk to says it KICKS ASS afterwords

The way I understand it, is that you use the X sliders and the R's upper tubes and guts. It should keep everything right where it's supposed to be.

If I don't get my 83-84 R forks, I'm gonna look into the 85-86 forks more. I've seen that picture where there all lined up and you can really tell which one has the R front end.
I'll have to look into the Works rear shock rebuild upgrade. I looked at my rear shock last night a little closer and I've got about a fourth of the threads left for preload. I'll screw it down all the way and see what that does.
