Got an '84 Honda 200X from my brother who got it from a guy who claimed the engine was "blown". I've got the top end off and so far, so good. Just the expected carbon and so forth. The rotor and stator are completely oil-soaked. When I took the kick starter cover off the oil that came out smelled burnt and had some water in it. Water was probably from my Bro leaving it set outside. This is my first foray into a re-build on a trike and I bought a clymer manual. Should I take it completely down or stick with a top-end overhaul and worn / missing parts replacement? :wondering
Are you good at taking things apart and putting them back together?
I would Get a Honda manual. They are more detailed.
If it were me,I would take it apart.

i'd just pull the side covers and flush it out good unless i seen some reason to spit the cases.

I'm a mechanic in the National Guard and have a fairly good mechanical background so the taking apart and putting together part shouldn't be a prob. Just haven't messed with these toys a whole lot and didn't see a whole lot of discussion anywhere on the subject. Better to ask before you spend!
I understand you saying the stator has oil IN it,correct? Well, mine has oil ON it,as in an oil seal behind it may be blown. Haven't gotten in there to find out, yet.
So far the "split it" crowd has the majority, so here I go. Pray for me.;)

Yeah, most definitely on the pics. Already been doin that. Once I saw how many different length screws were on the engine, I figured pics and MAJOR organization were the way to go. I do appreciate the help, as well. I,too, was deprived as a child. Had a couple dirt bikes I bought myself, but "toys" like three wheelers and so forth weren't mandatory for survival, so at 43 I'm picking up where I left off Can't wait to fire it up!!
