View Full Version : Split T3 cases, can't find neutral

I split the cases a couple days ago and now I'm trying to put them back together. I have a shop manual and have read it. It says to put the transmission into neutral before you reconnect the case halves. Now for the problem: I can't find neutral.

The idea is that there's a piece of the gear shift mechannism that goes on after I put the case halves back together. The picture in the manual shows this gear( circled in my pictures) with the one funny tooth in the 3 o'clock position and I think this is neutral. But when I move the selector drum by hand to find neutral, the funny tooth isn't in the three o'clock position, it's in more like a 6 o'clock position.

Take a look at the pictures and please give me advice on what to do. I'd really hate to get it back together and find that it won't shift.

On another note: I lost the little ball bearing on the clutch end of the clutch shaft, the one just inside the actuator button on the clutch end of the rod. I looked all over and can't find it. I took a 5/16 bolt and cut a piece to what I think is the correct length, about 5/16 inches long. It's not back together yet, but it seems like it will work fine. What do ya'll think about that rig-up?

Thanks, Chris

if it wont shift now, it wont shift later. You may have to turn the gears to make it shift. you should be able to spin the main shaft, without driving the countershaft if you are in nuetral. I cant see how the drum could go in wrong. If you stare at it long enough, it will all make sense. I am sure your spacer for the clutch rod may work fine, But I would find another ball.

As long as you have the three forks in the correct slots in the gears and they are in the drum grooves you should be able to bench shift it by rotating the shift drum and turning the countershaft at the same time. Neutral is the detent on the drum star that is cut out to hold it between gears and that can't be installed unitl cases are assembled. It's actually hard to install a tranny wrong since the components wont go together. It will always go down for first since the ratchet grabs the star dowels to push and grabs to go up. Neutral happens when the roller is on the shallow relief on the star. It will always be there. Don't let it confuse you.

You need to replace the bearing with a bearing because the clutch basket and push rod rotate in relation to each other.

I think I understand. I can't find neutral because it isn't there until I put the cases back together.

Moose, I didn't think about the spin of the clutch basket, I better find a bearing to put in there.

Thanks guys, Chris
