After collecting parts for the last six months I finally decided to start my MX project for the TF motocross. I figured I'd get everything out of the boxes and do a rough assembly to see what else is needed. It's going to be a totally different color when its complete but here is a few pics of whats here now. I'll post up progress pics as it goes. Check out the ugly seat.

The previous owner painted the frame and alot of other small parts so they'll all be blasted and pc'd. The motor is also getting some work done including a long rod kit. Still need new rims, alll new maier plastics and tank, shocks rebuilt, handlebars and other small stuff. I hope it looks as good when it is finished as it does in my head.

Hey Rick...The good news is, my vacation for TF week has already been approved...bad news, I'll likely have to borrow my bike back to race against you if I have the desire/nerve. Good luck with your project.

do you already have the blue fenders or was that a photoshop? I was going to do my 85R all blue and red but the blue fenders are no longer available through maier :wondering I did get some from breastman off of the boards but they are not "SHOW QUALITY". I might be able to sand them and all of that but im sure it'll take awhile. I have to many projects right now so my blue plastic has to wait :D

i did just check jlatvs website and they appear to have them......Maier also "SHOWED" that they had them though. I ordered them and they called me back and said they were discontinued. I wont lie, I'll be very very jealous if you get NEW Blue fenders :D If i would have known about that website i wouldve tried them before i went ahead and got the red fenders  I'll just have to win one of your "plastic restoration kits" from tf07

Update.
Unless a miracle happens and I can find blue pastics, I'll probably go with red. I have one more resource to checkout. Thanks swiney. Motor top end is almost complete. Swinger is stretched and getting ready for pc.

Does anyone have a link to douglas's website? The wife is wiling to get me my front rim for my b-day and I need to find out where she can get it from. Who has the best price? What size?

3leggeddog
02-14-2007, 02:21 PM
if your buying a new front rim be sure to go with the 10inch.derrick knows the part number.you will find a way better selection of tires, and way better handling traits from the smaller front tire.

i run a 20x7x10 on my mx-r.you could go with a 21,but i wouldn't go much taller.

seadoo650
02-14-2007, 03:41 PM
Will a 10" be ok for trailriding too? This bike will not be strictly mx.

Does anyone have a link to douglas's website? I can't find the damn thing. Or a link to someone's website with douglas 10 and 11 inch .190 front rims.

Derrick Adams
02-14-2007, 04:00 PM
Rick, both the 10" and 11" wheels are custom order. 10 to 12 week turn around.

Here's their website... http://www.douglaswheel.com/

You will have to call them and get an order form faxed to you. Then fill it out and fax it back.

Do a search on 10" front wheel and you will find the part number for what you need.

Alot of MX bikes getting built this year! I love it!

Their website sucks. I don't wanna buy a custom front rim. I think I'll just get a oem 350x front and polish it. What about itp?

Plans have changed Rick. My bike will still be MY bike come TF. Build yours up all you want, but practice your blocking skills in the mean time or my little rag will hand it to you...lol. That is, of course, providing you even get ahead of me on the holeshot.

All by hand. Started with my right angle grinder and a rough coocie then super fine cookie then 400 grit then steel wool and a polishing pad with my own secret compound to shine them up. You're looking at about eight hours worth of work so far. Still gotta do the rear grab bar and side cases and maybe some other small parts.

Nothing new to report. Damn powder coater still has my friggin fram. (three weeks now) Waiting for the stupid credit card company to send me some convenience checks for the plastics. (I used to get these son's-a-beeches five times a week and now that I need them POOF... GONE) Motor is out getting the bottom end put together. (thanks Mosh) So here comes a nice weekend that I was hoping to get some real progress done on the bike and I'm gonna end up sitting around with my thumb up my butt. (translation....honey-doo list) CRAP I don't even have any new pics to keep edog happy. LOL Anyone need their bike worked on? One more week and I'm gonna get outta practice.

Yea, I just ordered a custom navy blue tank from Clarke today. Should be here in two weeks. Unfortunatly not in time for Smith Road race. As of right now I'm not sure if the bike will be ready by then. I can run with the red tank if everything else falls into place by then. But I will have it ready for TF for sure.

Silver backplate with blue outline and blue numbers. The shroud decals will be all silver with blue outline also. Blue numberplate with silver mesh hopefully.

any updates?

Yes. I have a few updates. Keep in mind I'm biting my tongue when typing this.

First off. I'm not happy at all with the tank. I ordered one from Clarke and the color is way off. Me and the lady on the phone went on and on looking at colors on their website to make sure it was a match. Well it is'nt. Also the fit compared to the stock tank is *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited*. So I will be very hesitant to order from them again.

Second off the plactics from maier mostly fit well, except for the tank shrouds. They look like a five year old trimmed them. They fit about as good as the tank. (all five sets) I'll do my best to trim them straight and make them work.

Anyways I'm feeling a little discouraged at the moment.

On a good note the bottom end of the motor I believe is coming together so it should go in this weekend. Hopefully be able to run it at Smith road.

Here are a few pics. The plastics are Yamaha navy blue. According to Clarke the tank is also.

I'm on the phone with Rick right now. After some deliberation we've come to the conclusion that Clarke's REFLEX blue is actually the match we're looking for.

Sadly Rick was the poor guinea pig learning the mistake the hard way. That's ok, only a minor set back.

Maybe you could go with a silver tank or even white and change the frame to white.

Other then that it is nice!

I'm pretty sure he's ordering another tank. I'm gonna take this one and find another use for it. We're out to make it match!

Got the motor in and fired it up this weekend. Needs a few minor things (waterpump gasket, rejettted) but it runs. Thanks millions to Rob (Moshman) for helping me with this. Worked on it Sunday for about 12 hours. Tried to get it done for Smith Raod race. Also a big thanks to Mark (garageboy) for his help and parts. Anything you guys need just ask.

On a positive note, the darker blue tank is growing on me. I may keep it for now and buy another later.

Got the moter back together today after a minor teardown for some loose bolts. Still doing a little tuning but she's running pretty good. Drug her out of the dirty garage for some purdy pics. Still need the sticker kit. (it's on the way), handle bars, and fork seals done but it will be ready for trikefest.:w00t: I took the time while it was apart to paint and touch up the motor a bit too.

Hope to get a little seat time on it tomorrow with Derrick at Nate's.

Also if anyone is looking for some custom decals I am getting mine from the Evbay store under the name of atomicquads. Talked to him on the phone and he's a real nice guy. Check it out.

Now for some pics.

hey rick was just thinkin that if you got a sticker kit with that dark blue and the light blue it might tie it in alot better! Or some dark blue number backgrounds!

Update. Just got the flatslide carb on and it's not flooding anymore. I'll probably have to put a lerger jet in now. It acts like it wants more fuel. Thanks for the advice on the carb Rob. Should have done this in the first place. Still waiting on decals. Still gotta replace the handlebars and put in fork seals. Cutting it close like last year.

Wow thats hot! Awesome!

Can I make a few comments? First...get a tank cover made that matches the plastic. That should help things.

Also what about the factory blue fork boots? Might be interesting because of the different colors of the blue. Maybe when you get the decals made...use some of the fork boot color blue in them.

Lastly, see about painting the engine the dark silver like the '86 250rs. That would be really a nice touch and would go with the seat.

That is the prettiest R i have ever seen. As a kid I would go into the Honda dealers in '82 and '83...and those blue ATC's drove me crazy!

They were breath taking like your R is now!

Thanks for the comments. I'll look into getting a matching tank later when funds are available. I'm not too interested in the factory fork boots. I've never really liked them (or the prices right now). I like the looks of the smaller forkskinz. On the motor. There is alot more in store for it. Chrome and polish.

Read the description. The picture of the bike is to show how the fenders look on it. The bike is mine and not sor sale.

Just got the new fork seals in and the carb tuned better. Runs good. Having trouble with idle.

Still hav'nt got the decals yet. I've called and left email. Might have to get red with this guy.

It's got a 145 main and a 42 slow jet. Pret much the stock setup for an 86 R. The 85 calls for a 52 slow jet so I might need one of those for idle. I got a 86 250r carb off ebay for $50.00 last week. Looks like new. Works great. All those CR carbs were going too high for my broke arse. Cool on the bars. I'll put them on Tues. night.

We'll just got the decals in the nick of time. All done except the new bars which will go on at TF. The parts that look white are actually silver. (damn camera) I took the idea for my numbers from speedbump except I used my wife and I's anniversary.

Looks pretty good. HMMMM. What's next????
