i just recently purchased a 1984 ytm 225 dx shaft drive i got it running and it runs fine but it feels like the clutch is slipping then it catches but if i let off the throttle it does it again. i dont think its the clutch because in my past experience once it slips its a done deal thes is my first auto besides my pocket bike (dont ask) and its my first shaft drive ( i said shaft lol) ive read threads where the splines strip but it doesnt grind and when it engages it runs fine. it sat for six years so can the clutch stick and not engage? i plan to tear it down soon to see just what ive got .whoever had it thrashed it but its part of the family now soooo. :beer :beer :beer thanks in advance for your help

Welcome to the boards!

Cant say I know whats wrong with your ride, dx's are not my area of expertise.

Someone around here can tell you what your problem is real soon though, hang tight.

Sounds to me like your clutches are slipping. They can rebuilt very cheaply assuming you can do the repairs yourself. I have never heard of the symptoms you describe being shaft / differential related.

Could be your sentrifical clutch springs are broke. i would change all the oils and filters, and change the oil in the rear diff. Even open up *Edited**Edited* side case and check out your whole clutch basket. Mine is the same as your in my pic under these words. Itys real wasy to open up and put bacl so dont worry about it.

ok so i took off the clutch cover to measure the clutches. it looks like they were in pretty bad shape. measuring them it looks like they need replacing so i find the centrifical? clutch on ebay bought it and it looks like this in the pic:pics: . so... i know it dosnt look like the one in there now . all the part #'s match from yammahha though .:wondering i hope it fits. now i got $700 in it ,but it runs strong. so far ive bought a battery box cover, clutches, gaskets, innova red front tire, shindy carb kitnew battery charger and a starter off of ebay that needs rebuilt so now i have 2 that are useless but it starts first pull consistantly.anyways here it is the pics:beer

that centrifical clutch looks so different, its the wrong one but it might be an interchangable one.

i put the new clutches in a couple weeks ago, runs like a champ. i had teken it apart to look at the old clutches ,they seemed fine but i guess they were just a little too far gone.

Glad you figure it out. Sorry I can't help as I did not have any problems with mine. Pretty strong bike and you will not be dissapointed with it. Reliable too, once I figure out the pull cord....it fired at the first pull!
