I'm getting tired of how tough my clutch is when I'm ridding. After a while of full out racing around and such it like puts a hurting on the forearm. Question I have, anybody look into an afternoarket clutch or even a clutch cable to give a smooth use for the bike. I rode a 450R the other day and the clutch was SUPER smooth barely took en effort to pull in the lever. That's what I'd like but for my 86R. Ideas would be great :beer

if you clutch is real stiff the basket probably has groves worn into it......id pull the cover and check the basket first

when they have groves they cant slid and get real hard to pull

No it's fine I checked that a couple months back when there was a horrible sound while the bike was running (flywheel came apart) and it and the discs were ok. It's not really stiff just not a smooth as I'd like.
It's like a muscle are stick shift and a BMW stick shift, new technology makes the the clutches way smoother. Could a cable make a difference or should I look into a newier stlye clutch/springs kit?

i use honda cr style levers and perches they pull real nice

as for the cable.....take it off and see if it moves good

is there any rust on *Edited**Edited* cable or anything, i dont know just a idea

Not that I know of... the outside doesn't have any cracks or rips that would show rust. It's always been like this though, I don't know if this cable is the original OEM one or not, probably is too haha

I thought a stiff clutch ment strong clutch springs. Or it could be the cable. It would be cool to have a hydraulic clutch.

check dennis kirk.. i think they have one of those "gear reduction" clutch levers... not sure what the real name is... but they look like a good deal

NOw that I think about it there were some grooves and I don't tihnk I grinded them down, supposed to do that right bryan?

Step one - disconnect clutch cable at each end, and see that the cable moves easily back and forth in the casing, with no friction or drag. It should move with no effort whatsoever. If not, replace it. Aftermarket cable runs about $10-$15 so its poinles to run $20 worth of WD40 through your cable to try to get it to work.

If your cable moves freely, then my best guess is that somebody put in a heavy duty spring kit. For some reason, people seem to think that only a heavy duty is a suitable replacement for an OEM clutch that lasted 15 years, and prefer to ride around with their wrist and forearms aching just to say theyve got one. Barnett made a fortune off of these people! Heavy duty clutches are a waste of money in most cases. A 250R clutch should be pretty mild pulling. Buy a new set of standard clutch springs for about $10 and you will be happy.

I have had lots and lots of worn out, grooved baskets over the years, and have never seen one cause a clutch to be hard to pull. They do cause a host of other problems, but thats for another thread.

i found the name of that clutch perch.... its a moose easy pull clutch.... so if your basket isn't grooved and the springs aren't heavy duty... then i'd try an easy pull clutch....

I had one on a '75 IT400. They work like an 85 two piece TriZ throttle cable, or I should say, DONT work like an 85 Z cable. I took it off after one ride and sold it on ebay. Sorry, if it was anybody here!

Yea I will be sure to check the cable first off, could be that it's old im sure haha
As for the springs I wouldn't doubt the fact they are heavy duty, the motor was rebuilt before I bought it so I don't know what exactlly was done so. Yea I've heard the basket would case slipage and even a difficult time getting into neutral, not a rough clutch. WHOA WHOA WHOA Slow the gear reduction cable horse down there cowboy.

Take a look at the MSR Easy Pull clutch lever and perch assembly. By far, the best money you could put into your clutch system.

I recently installed one on my own 86R and it was AMAZING. I can operate the clutch with my ring finger only! I also have had to deal with filing my basket, so I know this product works wonders.

Ask 3leggeddog, Derrick, Max or anyone else who pulled my clutch lever at our New Years Day ride at The Valley.

Let me just say this...it will make a CR500 clutch pull like a 250R. Do the math, half the motor, half the pull = install this product and a 250R will pull like a 125...nothing to it at all.

This can actually reduce the strain on the arms? Geez why didn't I upgrade my lever in the first place lol So many options to choose.. I think I will go with a new cable and possibably this lever, need to wait on the funds from work first :(

Yeah I would try a new lever, perch and cable. And buy a good cable. I bought a cheap ass one on ebay, and it was junk. After I lubed it, it was kinda ridable. You generally get what you pay for...

It has 3 different positions that you can attach the clutch cable to and therefore change the pivot point which changes the pull.
