X = Manual Clutch

S = Auto Clutch..

either way.. tough motors..

I say 200x with a manual, Always more fun to popping clutchs and riding them! lol I think you get swab some more power outa them personally. Or they are just more fun :)

either of them have a hard time finding parts? (motor parts)

I would go with the x motor just cause of the manual clutch. With the 83-85 200x motors they have a 5 speed transmission, and they are easier to find parts for since they were produced longer than the 86-87. With the 86-87 they had a 6 speed trans mission, but not as many upgrades availible for them compaired the the 83-85. But I would deffinately go with the x. You could also make and Auto X? So many choices.

One thing to be aware of is the 83-85 X motors have kickstarter issues. The correct rebuild kits are getting hard to find.

i have nuff cash for either auto 200s motor or manual 83-85 200x motor. all ive found is 200x motors are going for alot on ebay and 200s motors are not. i could get a 2 motor for 2/3 of the cost of a X motor thats ready to go. will a 200s have nuff power to break the wheels loose in the rear and roost some dirt?

i have a 200s it has a 5 speed auto well you still have to shift just not with a clutch. if you want a 200x auto but the top end off a x onto the s bottom half. that way you have no kick start issues. if you go with a complete 200s engine you could put a higher compression piston and rings in with a 200x cam. but as said either engine is a good one.

i was looking to either use a full X motor or full S motor. i dont want to mix engines i have nothing agaist it, just trying to get a complete engine ready to go and i found a few.

how to the pull start motors hold up? ive never heard anything bad about the recoils but then again i am pretty new to 3wheelers. i wasnt crazy about how the 200x kicks over to he honest.

forgot to say yes i know auto S motors mean no clutch just shift thru gears. i owned a kawasaki bayou220 back in 94 with that style motor, shift and stop and gas and have fun. it was electric start.

are the pull start motors hard to start? i am not a big build guy (125 in gear)

they pul over pretty easy. yea i would go with the s if your not to crazy about busting your shin. i have had problems with the recoil but they wer my own fault. so yea they hold up. i would deffinetly go with the s. just my opinion

like you said the s is cheaper to buy too.

chris,

what makes the 200x kickerstarter issues? never heard of that before.

the gear breaks in the case if i remember rite. ive herd of that. i was going to build a s/x engine and people told me to leave the s bottom half there because the x had problems with the kick starter.

ok was this all the x's? 83-85 or early models. i was looking at a 83 engine. sounds more and more like i should go 200S.

from what i understand all the 200x's had the problem. but i could be wrong. there is not a very big diffrance between the two engines. i think the biggest is the compression. the s has around 7:1 and the x has 9.6:1 other than that ther very much alike when you talk engine. there are some other diffrances too like the cam.

yea compression = power but if you want the power of a x in a s then get a higher compression piston and rings.

wow thanks alot. ill have to keep that in mind about X power in an S. i was looking at wiseco pistons and that said about 10.25:1 for all 81-86 ATC200/E/ES/M/S and 200X also there was a 12:1 again for the same bikes. its nice to know if you need parts it seems there is a lot of these old motors around.

i dont think i will miss a clutch, i never did when i had my bayou 220

i would think 12:1 compression would be hard to start buy maybe i am wrong?

xr200 dirtbike engines also fit the 83-85 200x.I don't know how to post a link to the thread but do a search on xr200.there is alot of information on this.:)

my s has 12:1 it has a kick yea but not as bad as you are thinking. plus the s has a decompression lever on it.

yes i know xr200r motors fit, problem is you need to reverse the kicker and well i dont think i wanna get slapped in the shin. i got the inside of my leg just above my mx boots on my 97 cr125 when i was in highschool and it took 3 months for black and blue to go away, it hurt like all h*ll.

im gonna go with a S motor, ive made my mind up, it may be safer for me learning to ride wheelers anyway as ive heard it can take awhile to master the machines.

i didnt know these motors had decompression, i road a 1984 yamaha TT600 4stroke enduro bike (much like XT600) and it had no decompresson. it was like i was kicking over two mx 250 2stroke bikes, and at 125lbs i had to put all of me into it.

again thanks for all the info. ive been able to sort alot out with everyones help so far.

your 200s had a kick? or it has kick? i was under the impression these were pull start motors.

01-02-2007, 09:31 PM
lol no it is recoil but when i say it has a kick i ment that when i pull it it jerks my arm a little bit. but that with 12:1 bored 2mm.

as far as riding a trike its not that hard. just pay attention. i ride like its a snowmobile. its how i ride.

oldskool83
01-02-2007, 09:34 PM
never road a sled, we never get any snow anymore or else id want one, i figured a 3wheeler would cure itch for all kinds of machines rolled into one. i was a bike guy but just to small for big ones, i fell in love with thats 200x i road last friday so this will be my new itch.

never will give up my sportbike though, just dirtbikes i belive.

man i like sport bikes i love the sounds and performance of them. anyways yea man i want a x but all i could afford was a s. good think its bored it cures my speed itch al little more than if it wer stock.

i have a 1983 xr200r motor if somebody wants it ... i heard "they" install the 6 speed tranny into the 200x motors... it's complete...stator,ign.,cases,covers etc.no carb

oldskool83
01-02-2007, 10:32 PM
i like XR200 motors, i owen 5 of them bikes, good motor and bikes. i should be cured, if i want somthing fast all i would to do is buy a blow up 125 mx motor and fit that in....that could be fun but i want to get away from loud pingers and into reliable auto engines like i had when i was a kid, i also had a kx80 to so it was fun switching to the quad

i use to love the 2 strokes too. but the 4 strokes are a ton better on gas and not so danm loud. even with a streight pipe on my s it still isnt as loud as my 2 stroke sleds ever were i like both but for a atv and trike i like the 4 stroke. i had a blaster a few years ago. i didnt really like it. not to good in the mud lol and it started as it pleased. ide take it to the shop and bam it would fire up when it came off our truck. it made us look like morons all the time. but i showed it who was boss. i sold its ass.
