I have a 1986 350X and a 1985 250 sx both due for oil changes, just wonder what type of oil people like to run in these machines, i know for the 350 i need some thin for the clutch as well as the motor, and prolly same with the 250, just wonderin what type, and how much i need for both, thanks guys!

I run Valvoline 10w40 in everything in my signature. No problems. Use a good oil and change it often on air cooled trikes. I usually run 10/40 in the summer and 10/30 in the winter.

I use Honda GN4 year round in my SX... as I recall its takes a little over 2 qts, and dont forget to replace the oil filter also.

Dont forget to change the filters and make sure you dont install them backwards. Its easy to do on hondas. I myself run Maxima 20-50 in everything i own thats in my Signature.

I run Honda GN4 in all my trikes.

It is more important to do regular oil changes than what kind of oil you use.

Do you have to have additives in the oil for centrifugal clutch motors? A fella I talked to ***FAILURE TO WATCH YOUR LANGAUGE WILL GET YOU A BAN*** his clutch because of using the wrong oil, so I am rather cautious about this. My trike is due for an oil change in the next week or so.. Never owned something with a auto clutch before.

No, no additives.

Regular engine oil, like for a car is friction modified oil. I shouldnt have to explain what that means. ATV (or three wheeler) oil is non friction modified, the centrifugal clutches in an auto clutch motor need friction to operate properly, with friction modified oil, they will not build up the friction that they need and slip. So its not what the oil has, it what it doesnt have that counts.

Always ran Mobile 1 Synthetic (the car type and motorcycle type) in my 4 strokes for many, many years. Now I run Blue Marble 10W40, but not because I ever had problem with Mobile 1. At the time your trikes were made, most of them were being run with off the shelf 10w40 Valvoline, Quaker State, Penzoil etc. automotive oil.

I recently bought some GN4 for my brother's 250sx because I didn't want to risk screwing up the clutch in it, but I've been running Mobil 1 synthetic (car type) for years in my 300ex and CBR600 sportbike. Neither had any trouble with slipping clutches.

Never tried M1 but it's good to know! I have ran Syntec with no issues though. Now I just run a good dino oil since I change it every couple rides.

When the trikes were built, oils with the API rating SE & SF (most off the shelf oil)
was the factory recommented.( Clutches mainly) The new 4 strokes needs the SG rating or a M rating by the JASO T 903 standard. The auto parts stores don't normally have any these types of oil. Mobil One did have a sg rated one but not in last year or two. So the car oils would not be used based on this.
I go ahead and use the honda oil. Cost more, but it's one less thing to take a chance on. There is a lot of good aftermarket oils out there that the members can recommend!

I personaly messed up the clutch in my big red by running some synthetic oil for high milage motors, probebly had some extra addatives in it. Since then i have always run yamaha 4 stroke oil, not cuse i like yamaha, but just cuse theres a yamaha place alot closer to me than a honda shop. I have also run regular oil, and its been ok, just the the high milage or anything with losts of addatives that caused me problems
