Tonight I got my tecate running after about 4 months down for the count. Lots and lots of problems/delays. First I could shoot Kawasaki and Cometic for there &^%*^ base gaskets. I have the same problem with the cometic base gasket as I do with the Kawy one. On the r/l side of the crankcase as well as the back. There is a indentation there that the gaskets are only catching the outer side of the case. Not sure if it will last or not. I put the 88 Tecate 4 kehien carb On it and fired it up. I went up in jetting a while back for the piliot jet up from 45 to a 48 and 50. Thought the reeds,dg silencer air filter and slight porting might help solve this. But It did not. I can get it to idel but as soon as you litterly touch the throttle it surges. Tried to tinker with the air screw but still surges. Should I go down to a 35 piliot jet? My ricky stator Just stop working too. It worked fine when The bike last ran. I connected the wire leads off the stator to my hand and rolled the motor and got zip. Should have almost hurt me. Could surging be from timming being off? Im using my t4 stator and it has 3 marks. I used the middle one.
And to top it all off I have to use my red tank, with no paint and my frame/shock spring, handel bars are primer. Can,t afford to do nothing. So I got fed up and want to ride it.
Please help me

The surging sounds like an airleak issue. Have you done a leakdown test on it yet??

It always surged with that carb. Swicth carb to kx 250 carb and it does not surge.

If you turn the airscrew all the way in with it running, will it die??

I think so. It was quite a bit screwed in when I started it. I only let it run for about 2-3 minutes while I try a few things.

I am fairly certain that the surging is from being too lean. I would definitely look at the base gaskets you mentioned. The other carb may be jetted rich enough to compensate for the lean issue. Seek and ye shall find the problem. It's usually something simple. Just my ten cents worth of info that has been reduced, due to inflation, down to 2 cents.

I turned the air screw all the way in today and it did not stall. I have the air screw out almost 1 turn and it seems to be running way better. Still a bit bogy when I hit the gas but its not operating temp yet.

All ready to try her out but Im missing a very small and crutial piese. The clutch cable adjuster bolts. Dang blasted. :wondering
I need to wake up the neighbours with this beast.:naughty:
It sounds very mean. And alot louder. My shock relocator is in place and seems to working fine. And I now have functional rear shocks.

Had the kawy out for her maiden voyage today despite the surging at low revs.
And all I can Say is WOW!
Way more power then befor. And the sound with a complete tecate exhaust is sweet. Ill have no problem doing doughnuts on the highway.
