Wiring in a winch

I got a 2000lb winch for christmas I was planning on putting on my Big Red. It comes with that big ugly yellow handle controller, and I wanted to put a rocker switch instead of that. It wouldnt be as bad if the controller unplugged but its supposed to be wired to the winch. I looked at a couple of kits, but all of them come with a 'bridge' sort of thing. One person described it as something that helps protect your electrical system. I dont know really what it is or how it works or if I really even need it at all?? If I do need it, where do i put it, I have seen some people on here with winches, what have you guys done??
