Does anyone have a twist throttle on their trike? I had to replace the cable on mine recently after it became stuck during a ride (go figger!). I popped the throttle open and what do I find? The cable isn't the only problem as the lever's bushing that goes into the housing is worn 2 sizes too big. So now I have to replace that thing and it costs $107 or so for a new anodized gem at the dealer. However this thing does not come with the on-off-on switch the original had. Hmmm.... Neither did the twist type and that came with the cable too for $40. So I got that one. I tried this in the back yard the other day and it was in gear when I started it. It of course jerked and I kinda fell back while holding on to the new grips I stuck on there while I was at it. I found that throttle is a whole lot easier to twist especially with a new cable. Somehow it seems to give it a whole lot more get up and go so I guess I better start wearing that helmet more.
So whats everyone prefer thumb or twist?

i still like thumb throttles... i never really liked twist throttles because i felt like i wasn't holding on with both hands...

Thumb for sure, had twist on my Z when I got it. Talk about a nightmare, go through trails and your hands would jerk and you would twist it!
I never liked it period, catwalks were SO hard on the left arm cause you couldnt fully grasp. Thumb is the only way I see it.

Twist all the way. I have a thumb on my atc200 and I like it on that. I think thumb is better for work applications but not so much for race and sport.

thumb... had a twist on my ytm when I got it and riding rough trails it was hard to hold on without snatching the throttle open.

Its just a matter of personal preferance. For me I have ran both. It depends on the machine, the intended use, and rider condition. I prefer thumb throtle in the trees, and twist in open areas or long rides. I was deathly afraid of the twist when I was in poor physical condition, I think that plays a big part in the decision.

I don't think you can ride a 3 wheeler to It's full potential with a twist throttle (My opinion also). When turning left with your body hanging off the left side, It seems Impossible to have full control of the throttle. I just don't like the feeling, but to each their own.

I run twist on everything, might take a little more arm strength than a thumb, but if your strong enough and coordinated enough to hold your arm steady when going over bumps, nothing beats it.

ive got a thumb on the race quad, but bought my 200x with a twist on it... it is definitely a lot different, but i guess time will tell whether i keep it on or not.. i plan on racing with it so i think it will end up working out for me...

The short version...2 250Rs with twist throttle = 2 250Rs with bent forks.
I'll stick to thumb, thank you.

I ride thick woods and don't feel completely in control with the twist throttle. Have had some close calls that would have been less dramatic with a thumb throttle. Have a blue Moose thumb throttle coming.

Twist on the ATC's and dirt bikes...thumbs are for sleds. More consistant for me. Sucks going from a thumb ATC to the twist CR500 and back to the thumb ATC. Wanna try somethin' different ?? Put a thumb on a dirt bike. Kinda wierd. Every new ATC/Quad I aqquire...that's the first thing that get's scrapped...the thumb throttle.

I am asking because the return spring seems rather weak and its real easy for me to snatch that grip open going over potholes and those road undulations that are so much fun to ride through.

I'm not sure where, or who said it, but I'm sure it was on this forum, and it's stuck with me ever since, "A twist throttle adds as much to the machine, as shaved fenders do."
IMHO, twist is for two wheels only.

Well, I guess youre right about the shaved fenders. You end up getting even MORE mud all over you. However, it doesn't subtract as much paper out of my wallet as the thumb type would have which I think I now prefer but I guess Im stuck with this one for now.

I prefer twist, especially on my Tecates because that's what they came with. I run both though. If I had to pick one, definitely twist.

I hate twist throttles, both my 200x's had them and I immediately took them off! I've never liked them, I grew up on thumb throttles.

I had a twist on my 85 200x. I liked it once I got used to it. I think it was a Duo 812 or something like that. I have a thumb on my 350x though

I prefer twist now that ive gotten used to one. Although wheelies are a bit harder to get used to using a twist than thumb, but i like the looks and feel better.

I like the twist on a 2 stroke and a thumb on a 4 stroke. I have a 85 tecate and a 85 350x and I can ride them both just as mean or as soft as the other one. Do have to say that the twist kicked my arse on the tecate the 1st time out. Came of a jump wrong and grabbed a hand full of throttle and ran over my leg spent 2 months in a leg brace with a torn meniscus tendon in the left knee. Good times

^^ I hear ya...Thumb all the way for me.... Riding up a steep hill first ride on the tecate, bogged, downshifted, throttled, the next thing I knew the bike was riding me. Might not have prevented it with a thumb, but it wouldn't have happened so fast. Plus everything else I own has a thumb throttle
