Hi, Welcome to 3 Wheeler World!

What spring did you replace? The one on the kick start shaft in the transmission? If so did you replace it with the original or get the updated stiffer one (do you have the Part #)?

the return spring isn't what engages the gears- it is the tension spring that holds the 2 gears together- the outer ones not the inside spring- there might be a couple teeth missing from slipping check them out
i tried to upload a pic but it didnt work? --so look at the microfice -
goto whittier fun center to use the parts finder

Yes like jason said it is that spring that needs to be replaced, I forgot to say which of the two springs on the shaft:lol: . Honda had a kit to replace the gears and this spring but the kit is hard to find now. That spring is not a stiff as it needs to be so it lets the gears slip which will also wear them out. The new stiffer spring is discontinued but they are still out there, just make sure the gear teeth are good.

If your kickstarter is already slipping, then you will need to replace the pinion and ratcket as well. I have the Updated spring, but I don't have the other 2 parts. And I am out of the repair kits ( they are discontinued from Honda ). About your only option is to buy the parts seperately ( $60-$80 or more ).

There is a mod that is guaranteed to work that does not involve springs etc. I use it on my stroker Project X ATC70 engine conversions and slipping kickers are not even thought about. It involves doing some grinding on the gears where they grip together. You have to use a metal cutting disc on a small angle grinder mounted in a vise. I have an engine split at the moment,so I will post some images of the modified gears shortly. This sounds rough, but it does work 100%.

The teeth have to be ground so they inter-lock.

Hate to bring up an old thread, but this looks interesting.

Since you've ahd this mod done for a year now or so. Have you broken any of those teeth of? It just seems to me that if you ground one not so deep, all the stress would be on that one tooth and adventually cause it to break....

Has anyone experimented with added a washer in beside the spring, so the spring is "tighter" ? Just like as a spring shim.

Got that right.... Unless every single tooth is ground the same, there will be more or less stress on any given tooth.

yeah, but look who did that work...he isn't exactly the type of person to screw it up.

there was actually a guy selling this on ebay, you send him your original gears and stuff, and he would send you the modified setup.

but yeah, unless you did it perfect, it'd be sure to break.

Yep, I saw him too. Didn't he want about 50$ or so?? But he claimed to have finally got it right. I wouldn't even want to crack that case unless I could get next to new gears....

anyone mess with just shimming the spring?
What about the spring from the xr200 .. Did they have a slipping problem too?
