Hey all, well I've been thinking what I should do with my rollin 86 250r. I have thought and thought about doing a cr500 conversion like so many others.. but keep recieving more and more comments on how BAD they are, as in how much they shake, rattle ect. ect.

Personaly I would like to ride a cr500 conversion, and see for my self. But since there is no 500 conversion kit, each and everyone is differnt than what someone else has built. But since I cant really take one for a test drive, if you have built one (based on the 250r chassis) let me know your imput on how much it shaked, how hard it is to start (why would it be any harder than in the bike frame?), basicly the bad things that have came from building one.

My options are this,
A) build the cr500, and screw what everyone thinks / predictions of shakage.
B) just slap a 250r engine in it (dont want to do that).
C) Put a cr250 engien in'er and take use of the powervalves.
D) Build a 310, 340, 370, 410 ect big cc kits... would do this after buying the cr250 or 250r (if the cr250 would work?).

And if you have built a 310 kit, or any others even cr250.. please post your input on how much more powerfull that kit is than stock, top speed.. accell.. race stories, what ever. Also put costs you indured..

Thanks,

I believe 200x Basket may be a good source of information as I believe he has done this conversion.

My opinon, is if your really wanting to have a modified motor, just go with the stock 250R engine and send it to someone like ESR, Curtis Sparks, Duncan Racing, or MP racing. Just don't go totally over board with it. Personally I wouldn't go above a 300cc kit along with some porting. Follow up with a carb and a exhaust tuned to what you'll be needing. Lowend, midrange, or topend.

I'd most definatley go with the cr250 engine if you do a lot of different terrains of riding. Plus parts will be cheep for it and plentiful.

whats the difference between cr250r and the other 250rs besides the kick starters and the number of gears?

Get the best of both worlds by putting a CR250 engine in and boring it to a 310.

Yeah atccrazy has the question I have had since starting this project.. can you put the 250r 310 kits on the cr250's?

I mean think about it.. they rave about teh 370 kit, and that it can outdo most anything even teh cr500's. So slap a powervalve into that mixture and you should be cookin it.

But has anyone, or do you know, if you can put the same kits on the cr's? I suppose there are other kits for the cr perhaps... :?:

i say you go and do a crf 450 engine in it that would be a kickin change they got more power than the cr500's if you want to get a 250 then build it up with ESR i rode a ESR built 250r and that thing moved also there shop is only like 15 min from my house

Good call with the CRF450 NOS_350X, never thought of that. Also I think a late model CR250 would be a great choice, seeing as the current ones are rated at 52hp as opposed to 38 on the ATC 250R watercooled style.

No, You can't. All of the CR motors are qutie a bit different then their ATC and TRX offsprings. I wouldn't reccomend a CR motor because of working around the backwards kick starter. It can be done, but in my opinon is not worth the worry. I've had my own problems with the backwards kicker on my 500X, and its not been too fun. Getting it to clear the frame, the rear master cylinder, getting enough throw out of it to crank it. There is no remedy to keep it from hitting the rear fenders, unless you make some sort of device to flop the fenders back when your cranking it, or just plain out cut the fenders off.

A CRF motor would be extremely cool, but also costly. And would involve new territory that no one else has been it. I wouldn't exactly reccomend it to a first timer or someone without a whole lot of experience (No offense Instinctz)

i have heard you "dream" of owning one for the last 6 months. in my opinion you should grow a pair and build the 500. i think you will learn to be a lot more humble  i really doubt you have the $$$ or skills to build it any better then mine was. you like to slam on my 500 but you have never attempted to build your own and have no clue what you are getting in to. there is no way to build the 500r with the 250r chassis unless you dimple it as i did, or cut out and replace the front "y" for the exhaust. if you replace the front "y" your engine will hit the tank and so will the exhaust. if you leave the y and replace the bottom of the cradle you will lose "1-2" of ground clearance. they are all different because there is no easy way to do it. if you do not have a mig welder, a band saw, a torch, and other big tools you will be paying for a major part of the work. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ it will cost you about $900 not counting the 250r chassis. if you do all the work, including building the pipe.

well i saw one but i didnt get a good look at it but from what i saw it looked good suprisingly it looked like it fit in the frame perty easely as for cost i belive the crate engine is only like $2200 but not sure bout that.

the owner of the atc said the all around power was magnificent and that he could easely keep up with pipled bahshees

You've seen a CRF motor in a trike?!?!?!? Wow, I want some pictures of that one.
