View Full Version : One of the original test trikes...... atc70

After a lot more probing by my friend in Eastern Quebec.. the same fellow that scooped the atc70 for me at the estate sale.... checked with some of the locals and was told the bike I have was a test bike that WAS cobbled together in 1970 for testing in extreme cold weather and adverse conditions that exist in Eastern Quebec. It was also supplied with the 2nd engine... from an atc90... the paperwork confirms it was registered in Quebec in 1970 as does the ID plate and the VIN# stamped into it.
Everyone was under the impression it had been returned to Honda North America
after the testing period was over.... and were surprised to find it was under tarps and crud in an old ramshackle out-building 30+ years later... With this being unit #096 I've decided to go with a full rebuild in the original colors etc.
Does anyone have access to the color code numbers for the Daytona Orange and the Silver paints used in the '70 to '73 era. At my age...62... I've got nothing but time on my hands and my disability pension to concern me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated....

I just got an email from him regarding this machine , First off this is not a test bike I can guarentee it , almost all of the proto type bikes are not issued a VIN # and they were destroyed after testing this happens to all models even all these high tech works parts the motocross guys use are destroyed after the season thats just how it works. plus I think I am reading the number right it looks like there might be a 7000 model number tough to see . I know a guy right now that has number 36 of the 1973 ATC70 that was bought at a dealer in 73 by his friend. It sounds like a cool story but unfortunatley not true. on another note Honda even as a prototype would never test something that looks like this bike . It is a 73 K0 model witch is still cool although its going to need alot of correct parts located almost the entire bike is wrong .

To Eric and those that endeavored to assist me, I thank you for your input, I really appreciated it... seems I now have a lot of new questions to ask my friend in Quebec.... a lot of questions....
To Mike, I'm glad I only asked if you carried the Daytona Orange and Silver paint from Honda.... based on your posting.... which I still haven't figured was for my
benefit in separating the truth from the myth in Quebec that I paid for.. or to let everyone else know how smart you are... I allow everyone to make a fool of me
ONCE..... and one of us just ran out.....
Thanks guys, but if this is how new members are treated by the senior members, I'm gone.........

Hey Mate,
Mike was only telling you that the machine was not a test bike. Nothing rude was said in Mikes comment. It is still a very cool trike, regardless of its history. Don't take it to heart man.

Yeah, don't take it to heart. I didn't see anything offensive either, just information from someone who had the info. You still got a nice project there, and a great story.

Spray the #'s with brake parts cleaner or something like that and they will appear. Or you could rub it with a pencil and paper.

Ok if its a 7 its number 7096 if its a 0 then its 96, pretty simple. I would take 400 grit sandpaper and hit the tops of the numbers and see if it clears it up . Mike

What is the VIN # on the registration, in 1970 they should have the true number.

Thanks for the info... disturbing... yes.... regretful.. no.. Now I definately have an even greater desire to rebuild the wee beasty.... and it definately has to be called
"FRANK*N*TRIKE" Kind of like the old Johnny Cash song... One Piece at a Time...
I suspect knowing my friend was not a local and it was going to an Anglo on the west coast couldn't be passed up.... not to worry though... I've got a decal somewhere around the house of 9 Beavers pi**ing on a frog that I can hang in a frame from the rear grab bar.
I want to thank everyone for their great help.... something good has definately been created... a friendship I won't forget... and a greater desire to breathe life back into the '70.
As for the goofs in Eastern Quebec that are no doubt rolling on the floor laughing... May the Sewers of Rangoon back up in their Habitant Pea Soup.

How in-depth are you going with the restore? This could definitely be one of the greatest resurrections on 3ww.

I'm willing to go all the way.... I've got plastics coming in for it, but that will only be temporary.... I want to rework the metal body parts... I think they can all be salvaged without need for any Bondo... hate the stuff anyway... have a neighbour
that is a wiz on the English Wheel.. and has a paint booth... so I'll be getting the exact paints from Mike.
Just got an original atc70 gas tank from a fantastic chap in Arizona and a couple of original rims as well, good thing as the gas tank that came with it is from an atc90 and looks like someone took out their frustration on it with a 12 guage.
Both engines look not that bad.... carb needs cleaning and rebuild kit... going to tear both down and rebuild.. replace all bearings and gasgets.. etc.
Rubber looks good... Dunlops... so I have to research the brand of the original tires.
The one thing I do not have is a SEAT... or any of the seat components....
Lost my workshop in the last blizzard... anyone need kindling????? Wonder what
the wife will say if I use the Pecan dining room table on the white carpet.....
I wonder what would happen if I put my spare CB450 Four on it... besides going straight up.
I'm retired, so time is no big deal for me... waking up each morning.. finding my glasses and my teeth... standing up... and having a cr*p is.... but I'm usually ok by noon, so little by little she will regain her original glory. Dream on....
