How can I be sure the Babe Ruth baseball I want to buy is authentic? The seller says it is but I'm not convinced. What should I ask him?

Anything like that you take a risk....I think you have to look at ALL the evidence presented...and make a personal judgment call...Good judgment is key!!! because with risk taking some people crash and burn and some people the risks pay off BIG. Good luck with the baseball :beer ;)

There is a guy out of St. Louis who would know for sure. He's is top in the industry when it comes to pre-80 collectables. I don't remeber the name off hand, you can try a search, but he was able to authenticate an early Cobb signed ball that I picked up from an old lady many years ago. He can tell you if it was signed during his career or after he retired. He's also the only guy in the world to have a bunch of bats and balls signed by every 500 hr hitter, dead or alive. He just keeps adding to both of them as they reach the milestone. Just hate to see when he runs out of room on all of them and can't add anymore. If I find the name, I'll shoot you a PM. He also does some work for PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)

PSA does the grading part of the collectables when it comes to centering, clarity and edges. You have to actually find someone who is well known to actually get what you want. Too many fakes out on the market. As of late, people are finding old Spalding balls in flee markets or estate sales and forging old players names on them and trying to pass them at the big auctions. I'll try and find that name, you can set it up with them to have the ball looked at... and if it's really worth anything, they may even offer to buy it... and they wont give you a sucker price for it either. If it's real, you're look at 10-15k.. and if it's really clean, could be as high as 100k.
