I am real close to getting me an 85 Z for a real good price, just need to finalize some things....but what I wanted to know is:

What gas makes these go best? Regular, Premium, etc.
What oil should I mix in the gas?
What ratio should I go with?

I'll post pics and how much I got this motha for when I get it...I think you might be shocked!

Thanks

I always try to run premium in most of my machines. However back when the gas prices were near $2 I did get a few cans of the regular. I use to run nothing but Honda Gn2 non synthetic 2 stroke oil in my rigs, however I got a really good deal on some yamalube (Non synthetic) and I've been using it since then. When my Z ran I was still using the Gn2. I mixed at 32:1. The ratio depends on what oil your running actually. If your using a synthetic oil or something really good, you can go kinda lean with it ( I Wouldn't go any leaner then 50:1 with anything, but some of the racing oils are rated for 100:1!). Don't buy a quart of .80 cents Walmart oil and try and run it at 50:1, the results would not be worth the money saved in my opinon. Just remember to not lean them out too much with the oil/gas ratio. Because if you do, bye bye motor.

I'm sure it's reccomended to run Yamalube...I've heard good things about Blue Marble 2-stroke oil...but it seems they only sell by the case, and I don't have the money to go spend 140 bucks on a case. How much does the Honda or Yamalube stuff cost? And believe me, I'm not gonna go down to Wally Word and buy JackOff Joes Off The Corner brand of twostroke oil...I'm gonna go with something with an established name and stick with it, so I know(hopefully) I will get dependibility.

When I was buying the GN2 I was paying around $70 for a case. I think somewheres in the neighborhood of $4.50 a quart (Something like that). And I bought the Yamalube I have now for around $2.00 a quart. I've had no problems running it in my 250R and even in the weed wacker.

I would probably wind up going with Yamalube seein as I how I have a Yamaha dealer here in town.....but my dad works in Vegas(they have like 3 honda dealers) so I imagine I could get him to buy it for me. Any recommendation on which is better?

Also, what happens if you run the oil too rich?
(sorry for what seems to be odd questions, I just don't know a *lot* about 2 strokes)

too rich= no idle, bad acceleration, smoky, and i mean a lot, and you can foul plugs quik.

You can't go wrong with Bel-Ray MC1. I run it at 50:1 in my Z with 92 octane. Been running it since the 80s with always great results. I used to be religious at 32:1 but now I just go the recommended 50:1 in the Z and my 86 Tecate. Its most definitely not CRAP.

Any good synthetic 2 stroke racing oil is going to be the way to go. as said before, don't go to wal-mart and grab "jack-off joe's" lol lol out-board motor oil and run it at 50:1. better stay at 32:1 or lower ratios.

Mine likes MC1 at 50:1 just fine with 87 octane regular, even though it usually gets premium because my R gets teh same mix but needs 91 octane to be happy.

Okey Dokey just one more question for y'all. What is the best way to accurately measure the oil?

Most synthetics such as MC1 come in 12oz bottles. You put one full bottle into a 5 gallon gas can, and add gas, and its comes out 50:1. Also many products are marked in increments on the outside of the bottle.

Go to your local cycle shop and ask for a Ratio Rite Cup. It's cheap and about the best thing you can have for ease of mixing different ratios.

You can get measuring devices made specifically for the purpose of mixing oil into fuel at most places that sell good 2-stroke oil.
