Picked up a nice 83 KLT 250, adult-owned, 53 original miles, garage kept. It has the usual issues from sitting so long, but nothing I can't deal with: Needs a new battery, carb needs to be cleaned and adjusted, fuel needs to be dumped and replaced.

It has two issues I suspect are inter-related. There were 4 really, REALLY fuel-fouled, black, sooty plugs in the toolbox, and the foam aircleaner element is disintegrating. There's also a pretty good film of oil in the bottom of the air box.

I'm wondering if the previous owner either overfilled the crankcase and the PCV sucked a bunch of oil into the air cleaner, or he got a little overzealous oiling the filter element. I'm going to change the oil and replace the filter and then run some "plug chops" as you fellers call them. (Excellent sticky on carb tuning BTW). It currently has a Champion plug in it, but my experience with Champs on other equipment over the years has been less than wonderful, so it'll be getting a new NGK as soon as I can get to town.

My question is, should I go with an original filter (and are they available?) or does K&N or someone make a replacement? Anything else to watch out for on this old beauty?

oh - and id go with UNI air filter. also, id have to see the whole oil in the air box thing, REMEMBER you have to put oil on your air filter, and if its not "THAT" kind of oil, maybe the idiots before you thought they had to put that kind of oil on - before you worry about the situation make sure everythings fixed up, change the oil, rejet the carb, clean the carb, start it up and THEN worry about that one, it might be nothing

That was the plan. "Uni" filter? You got a source?

Had a chance to mess with it some more today, and found that it will only run on full choke. This indicates to me that there's a passage plugged up in the carb somewhere. I pulled it apart and cleaned it up good, pulled the main and pilot jets and checked them, slide and needle look fine, so I'm guessing it's an internal passage that's plugged somewhere. I'll get a chance to look into it further tomorrow after work.

Meanwhile, does anyone know where I can find a diagram of the Keihin PW26 carb? I've got a Clymer manual on order, but I'd like to get a jump on getting this carb issue sorted out. So far, it's the only thing I can find wrong with it.
