1986 Yamaha Tri-Z

It is my buddies so im going to help him out with this one since i've got some 2 stroke expirence.

So it seems like the base gasket has blown on his, anyone seen this before?

Something could have caused it?

It is blown on the right hand side. We noticed a oil leak right there so we cleaned it off and kept a close eye on it when we took it riding the next time and found oil leaked out once again and sometimes when you kick it over and you get the 2 stroke whoooosh sound you can see a nice mist/smoke outta it. Doesnt seem like it is down on power and still runs/idles fine.

So he ordered the gasket and im thinking about just taking the cylinder bolts off and trying to replace it without removing the head because the local yamaha dealer want $36 for a head gasket and my buddy really cant afford it. Would this be feasible or is the head going to have to be taken off?

Anything i should be looking out for or should know before i go into this?
I didnt figure it would be to much of a project coming from my last one, I just totally rebuilt my 1985 KTM 125, Split the cases replaced main bearings, went through the trans, everything.

Thanks

Oh yeah im not surprised. This inst the first time it has been into though, his dad used to race it so it has been rebuilt once before.

Can i do it without taking the head off of the cylinder?
