Maybe this time around my luck with Tri-Z's will be different. I just picked up 3 of them in parts. I'm told enough parts to put 2 mostly together, minus piston kits. (guess both top-ends are wasted).
One is an 85 1/2 about half there. Originally bought this one for the frame and radiators. This will be the base for the new 4 stroke MX bike. Complete custom from the frame up.
One is an 85. This one is about 90% complete. Hopefully just some minor parts and a topend.
One is an 86. This one is around 60%. I would like to get this one back together pretty much stock. I always liked the 86's.
I'll have them home Sunday and i'll add some pics to this thread.
Anybody ever seen an FMF pipe for a Z? Supposedly the 85 has one. Soon see...

Hey Derrick would'nt it be easier to put a Honda motor into a Honda frame instead of shoving a Honda into a yamaha frame????LOL !!! I probably missed it ,but what kind of 4 stroke motor/ MX machine are you going with??

I reckon that a YF450Z motor in a Tri-Z frame would be awsome...

My MX-Z will be getting a YZ250F engine.
I thought about the 426 and the 450 but with the weight of a trike and the torque of the big 4 strokes, it just wasn't practical. The YZ250F offers the extra torque over the 2 stroke 250's but not so much that you can't keep the front wheel down. They also rev real high like a 2 stroke, so the charictaristics are similar. 32hp stock and 35 with minor bolt-ons.
The aftermarket also offers alot of performance parts for these engines. Cams, Bigbores, etc. So hp potential is low 40's if needed.
This bike is also receiving a complete suspension remake. Inverted forks up front and a Honda style rear swingarm and shock assembly. Going to ditch the stock 13 1/2" long shock and go with a 18 3/4" Elka long travel on a no link swingarm. Only downfall to this set-up is a custom fuel tank.
hey D. The fuel tank;I was wondering how a pw 50 tank would fit under the airbox cover.Might be something to look at.And the foot pegs, another idea would be to weld some pro peg adapters on the frame and run a set of pro peg nerfs with those beefy pegs built into them.Just some ideas.

I've already looked at the PW tanks. They do appear to fit. Matter of fact i'm trying to snag one on ebay right now! Prolly use one on one of the other Z's, But for the MX bike, i'm probably going to build a steel tank and make a carbon fiber cover for it.
Got the pegs handled too. Jason is going to help me with some custom nerfs w/ built in pegs. Going to tie both sides together under the frame too. No more bent pegs on the Z! (You interested in a set? We're already making a set for Kintore. Prolly $150)
This trike is gonna rock,When you get bored of it,i want first dibs on for sale options:drool: .And yes, tell Jason I would like a set.I will run them on the mx z.I was looking into the pw tank for the 310 big bore.Seems like a good route to go for short distance rides.Tell Jason maybe a custom seat for that 500 project might be in order:naughty:

Might sell one later. As for right now, I have to see what all I have to work with first.

I got the bikes home on Sunday. I need some new batterys for the digi, pick them up today and get some pics up. Got some decent parts, but nothing extraordinary. Judging from past experience the pipe and silencer are Cobra.
So, I decided last night to build the 85 with some experimental stuff i've been itching to try. (Not the 4 stroke MX bike, that's the 85 1/2)
I've been eyeballing the new Honda 450R rear swinger and suspension components on ebay for awhile now and they really seem to sell reasonable. So I think i'm going to go that route on this bike. Just to see if it will work.
I like the thought of an aluminum swingarm. Also going to be throwing some 250R front forks and hub on there to get a nice polished wheel up front.
Pics to come.
