does anyone know where i could find information on 1978 polaris tx 340's and 440's? my dad handed down to me his '78 340 free air and i absolutely love it, and i would like to read up about them. I know they were racing sleds, and it is easy to tell by its top speed (75 miles an hour, quite impressive for a little sled like a 340 FA) I'm looking for the colour codes as my hood was damaged in a crash (my dad hit something when he first got it back in 1979 or 1980 haha) and i am planning on ordering a new one. Also, if anyone has a '78 or '79 340 or 440 FA or a TX-L 340 (liquid cooled) for sale, please pm me, i'm very interested

any information on the 1978 polaris RXL racing sleds would be much appreciated too

you got a nice sled there. ive always wanted a tx but it never happend. i got into ski doos mainly the older doos. i had 2 polarises 1 was a 79 gemini 244 single f/a then a 72 or 73 polaris colt 294ss it was great till she blew and i couldnt find pistons and rings for it.

good luck finding parts man. after all it was a raceing sled. if you need specs let me know i may have some in the 3 vintage sled books i have.

ya...the one bad thing about old sleds is the lack of replacement parts...sorry if there was any confusion, those aren't actually me sleds, those were just pictures for reference haha, guess i should be more specific next time. The one on the left and right is a either 1978 RXL 250 or 340, the 2 in the middle are various years (1976-1979 i believe) of tx's, and that is what mine looks like, except for the paintjob.

this picture i found is what my sled looks like exactly. From what me and my friends could find, 3 things make my sled fairly rare. the low windshield i have, the cleated track, and hydraulic brakes. These 3 things were options (as far as i know) and not too many came from the factory this way.

you are rite the hydro brakes wer rare. my colt had them but i put them on off of a old gemini i had. all you have to do is trace the numbers off engine. there should be numers stamped on the jugs of the engine. let me know the numbers and i can look it up in my book.

ok, i'll pull my sled out tonight or tomorrow to get the numbers...i wanted to get her all spick and span for the winter anyways, so i might as well kill 2 birds with one stone haha...thanks for the help, its much appreciated :)

well i found some parts my dad had stashed away. A new rear compartment (the one on the sled is screwed shut as the handle is broken) and a brand spankin' new bellypan...i'm happy now, all i need is a new hood (or the old one to be repaired) and i'll look brand new

well man i would try to fix it because it would cost some big bucks to buy a new one.

well, i found hoods on www.vintagesleds.com for $299 plus shipping...ouch....way out of my price range...how would you go about repairing a hood with a big chip out of the paint? i quickly did this in paint to show what it looks like (use your imagination lol) so the yellowish coloured area represents fiberglass. a huge piece of paint (about 8 inches wide and 3 or 4 inches tall) is missing from my hood. how do you fix that? bondo then paint?

well all i can tell you is bondo or bondo brand fiberglass filler. fill it up even and smooth it out with a fine sand paper. clean it with prep-all and check it again. if you need to fill it again then do the same thing as many times as it takes. if you dont make sure its smooth then it wont cover rite when you go to paint it.

i would go with the fiberglass filler. its harder to sand but the paint doesnt look so blaaa on it like it does on bondo.
