Well I did it again. I just scored a 84 250R for a $150. The guy I got it from said the top end was siezed, and since he didn't want to deal with it, he's letting it go. When I looked at it the kick starter wouldn't budge. but as I was pulling it out of his garage I put it in 3rd let the clutch out and gave it a nudge. I felt it let go. For a change I didn't say a thing. just loaded it up and took it home. I squirt a little oil in the spark plug hole and now its cranking!
Problem though. No compression. I put my finger over the spark plug hole and I feel a poof nothing like my 200X. Ive got the cylinder soaking with tranny fluid. hoping its just a stuck ring. if not does the head come off in the frame? This is my first 2 stroke. am I missing something real obvious? its got great spark, I squirt gas into the cylinder to see if it would fire. but no luck. any input is appreciated.
I guess I need to order another master cylinder resevoir and seat cover. Hopefully it'll run in short order. I never thought Id get a 250R. I don't feel so bad about the KD80 minibike I missed out on last weekend. Jim

you can rebuild it with the engine in the frame. pull the tank and pipe. then pull the head and cylinder off.

can I just pull the cylinder and head and if the rings are stuck just unstick them reuse the gaskets, just to see if it'll run? If the rings aren't stuck I'll just get a new set and gaskets. Jim

It depends on If the piston was stuck from sitting or stuck while running it hard. You will know when you get the piston out.If the piston is scuffed up it probably needs bored and new piston and rings.

Okay for the 64 dollar question. whats a 84 250R sell for? figure new seat cover, rings or piston and rings if needed. I just don't want to get too carried away. my 200X Im into for $510. but thats new front tire, clutch, springs, cable, seat, maier rear fender. the R will also need a res. for the front brake.

i the R was rideable at least $1000 depending on where you live
around here one that is pretty haggard but rideable would go for $700-$1200

Without a deal, an ugly dependible R would go for anywhere between $600-$1200.

im putting 20$ on either a holre in the piston or an exhaust side of the piston dome melted.

Problem you have now is, that you dumped transmission fluid into the top end of your 2 stroke. Which means that you have to pull the motor out, tear the topend off and flush out the cases. If it had stuck rings or a hole in the piston (either way) you can't run it with the tranny fluid in there.

nop you cant. i learned threw all the sleds i had that those 2 stroke engines need to be clean in there.plus like they sled it would be a cood thing to tear the top end down. its easy as hell man.

84, Could you please say that all again. I'm struggling to understand a word of it. Thanks.
Jim Mac, nice deal mate. I think that you will need to put a new piston and rings into your new 250r judging by the description that you gave us. I hope that you get some riding time into it before you sell it though. Sounds to me like you want to sell it even before you've really had some fun on it.
Who knows? maybe the 200x will be the first to go once you've had some time up on an R.
pull it out tear the top end down, drain the trans fluid ou that you put in. Spend some money on it man, new piston/rings/gaskets, you wont be wasting your time, or money and will be glad you did to. And you may have helped yourself out some by putting that trans fluid in the crank case, when you turn it upside down it may drag some broken peices out with it. ANy ways for 150 spend 500 and have a sick R man! great score!

In Arizona super clean 83-84 250R go for about 1000-1100 because there are so many around here. one in you condition if you got it running really well might bring 700. i would get it running and and keep it for yourself and keep looking for a liquid R cuz once you 2stoke you never go back!

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I just ordered the front brake resivoir so the brakes will work, Now did I screw up with the tranny fluid? Im pulling the head and cylinder tonight. Do I just flip the motor over and let it drain? The picture is just the way I unloaded it last night. Can I use desiel to flush it? Any other words of wisdom when working with a 2 stroke? thanks Jim
shoot some starter fluid in there while upside down it will wash the rest out and dry up the crank case, you didt hurt it jsut try to clean as best a possible
Dammit!

If it were me I'd wash it out with a bit of diesel then pour just a small amount of two stroke oil in there and sping the crank real good just to keep everything lubed.

Okay folks the piston is holed on the exhaust side around the edge. It looks like the piston deposited aluminum on the cylinder. there is no ridge at all on the cylinder. can I just knock off the aluminum hone it and install a new piston? If not I'll take it to the machine shop tommorrow and see what the machinist says. For a stock piston who do you folks recommend? Im not looking for more compression or anything, just want to keep it stock. Also did I say Im cheap? thanks. Jim

You need to have it mic'd to tell if it needs bored or just honed. You can't tell by eyeballing it if it's starting to oval out or not.
Wiseco is probably the cheapest option for a piston kit. Expect it to be around $140 for the piston and rings. Get a new wrist pin if it doesn't come with one. Check for up and down play in the rod. A little side to side is ok. Up and down is bad. USE AN OEM HEAD GASKET.

Okay its off the shop tommorrow, the piston has 1.25mm stamped on it. is this good or bad. I saw dennis kirk has pistons, rings and pin for 125 bucks. Machine shop says 40 to bore. and I think I saw the top end gasket kit for 15 bucks. Hopefully it'll be done in a week or two. Then to clean it up and maybe installing a new seat cover. Jim
