I recently purchased a 1985 Big Red 250es that is extremely good shape! My ?'s are what can I do to it to get more power? I am going to put on a Cobra exhaust system, but what else can I do?

that thing is pretty peppy. do you really need more power? i mean me and my buddy pulled trees out and dragged some pretty big stumps with his. anyways i heard iradium plugs work good.

I have already put a UNI air filter on it, I also put on Dura Blue wheel spacers to make it wider! It smokes a little on start up, I have been thinking about having it rebuilt & maybe boring it out to a 300! Oh I also have 25" Vampires on it.

lmao i am retarded, how do you bore a motor out to 300 from 250 or 400 from 350. etc... i know i sound dumb, but i honestly don't know exactly what you do...

you send the cylinder to a machine shop and they make the bore bigger. you can only go so big tho.. you can't just say i wanna go from a 250 to a 300 without doing the research to see if its going to work.

I dont think your going to get 300 out of it, without putting in a larger sleeve, and a stroker crank, even if they are available, I would sugest are slight over bore, wiscoe piston, maybe even a little more compresion (will have to run high octane or race gas though) bigger cam, larger carb, full exuast, oil cooler. that should about do it then you willl have a big red thats as fast as a 200x!

if you want increase power put a bigger header on it and a better air filter a cobra exaust will only make it sound like crap

If thats your big red in your avatar then thats one nice lookin trike. Just curious, since your looking to get more power from your 250 what kind of riding do you do?

Yer joking right? You can always use more power.

not worth it. do some small mods. but nothing major. its a big red not a racer.

Yes that is my Big Red in my avartar, I will be putting on a Corbra exhaust system, I heard one before its not that loud! I will also be rigging up a removable snorkel, will put pics up when done! I mostly ride trails, & mudd, I need more power for the mud!

thats cool. i don't think they all do it, but every 250 ive ever seen smokes a bit at start up, i wouldn't take it seriously. it pisses me off sometimes when you see a perfectly good 3-wheeler and someone gets it and starts putting stuff on it and doing stuff to it to make it like a racer, ya kno. and i have noticed the 250 isen't the greatest in the mudd. nice machine by the way.

Don't say that, I finally have my 250es running! LOL. Well I guess any 3 wheeler is better than no 3 wheeler in the mud. I only paid $250 for my 250es, but I did get it running after some work. Now I have to install new wheel bearings. But it runs! It feels like it has a good bit of power and it doesn't smoke. I can't wait to get it in some mud!

their still fun even tho they seem to get stuck more. i'm not saying their terriable in the mud, just some of the smaller machines seem to go through the mud better. i like getting stuck tho.. thats when you kno you got some good muddin goin on. well i have a winch so its not as bad then without. not to get off the topic tho.

You can get more power, but you are not going to go any faster in the end. The bikes gearing limits that. If you wanted it to be quite a bit more snappy and have more top end, put a 250SX Rear Diff in it. My last 86 BR had one. It would smoke a normal big red. I raced a friends at trike fest and ate his lunch regularly. I out weighed him by 60 lbs and still left him behind. I wouldnt go modifying too much. The diff swap really changes things.

I also extended the crank case breather line & the rear diif. line all the way up next to the top of the snorkel, could not figure out which carb line that I needed to extend.

Big Reds are great in the mud. Mabey not compaired to a 4x4, but for what ya got, they do awsome. A friend had DirtDevils on his, they sucked the power down and he had to run no more than 3rd gear in the mud, but it would auger through almost anything. The only time mine gets stuck is when the mud gets over the rims and i loose momentum. If you could find alluminum rims to run on this with your heavier tires, it would cut down on rotating mass and would seam a little snapier (i havent done this, and dont know how much of a differance it would make ) ITP makes some.

Dont forget to re-jet if you get a pipe and filter. I recently put a Jardine exhaust on mine and its a little boggy if you try to can it, other than that i think its added noticable power.

that 250 wasn't meant to be a racer. for one, it's heavy. i would keep it to use as your "old faithful" and look around for a 250R, 200X, or 350X.

Just ride it! put a small winch on the front if you go deep.
Save your money for maintenance.
They are dream machines for sure.
