I know a couple people used red kote in plastic tanks before but has anybody ever used it with a white tank? I'm wondering if it stains it. :wondering

Those of you that have used it on plastic tanks before just in general, did it work? No bubbling decals?

from what i have heard the stuff works good. i am getting ready to do the inside of my t3 tank with the stuff. how evr i dont know if it stains white or not, i dont see why it would, it supposed to coat the inside of the tank, not permiate the plastic.

It's on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/RED-KOTE-GAS-FUEL-TANK-LINER-SEALER-MOTORCYCLE-REDKOTE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35574QQihZ020QQ itemZ300041039330QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW). I got my quart from a board member a long time ago. Did a 200x tank with and still have enough for one more tank (assuming it hasn't hardened up in the can).

I haven't tried it yet but I know people on here have done it. I'm hoping they'll chime in and let us know how it's holding up.

it says on the ebay page

"Important Note: This product is for use with Metal Gas Tanks only. Not for use with Fiberglass or Plastic Fuel Tanks."

I'm aware. I know it's been done before though with apparently positive results. I'm not sure if that warning is due to concerns about it bonding properly or damaging the material or what.

I think Howdy tested on a plastic gas can. Guess I could do that too.

Just curious....What is the purpose of coating a plastic tank?

Keeps the gas vapors from bleeding through the plastic so you can put the stock decals on or paint the plastic.

Yep, I spot coated a hole in a plastic gas can. The spot is about the size of a silver dollar. I did this quite a while ago ( 6-12 months ). I still use the can regularly and the red-kote is still bonding VERY well with the plastic. I can't tell if it stained the plastic because it was a red can. lol

Each person has their own reasons for doing or not doing something. What works for one may not work for someone else.
With that being said, When or if I ever decide to dress up the 2 of my 350x's that have plastic tanks. I will be coating the inside of them with red-kote so that the stickers will remain on the tank.

I was reading some of the instructions from Red Kote and it appears they don't recommend using it on plastic tanks for the bonding issue. Not because it will damage anything. I'm thinking about maybe putting some sand in the tank and sloshing it around real good to roughen up the surface.

My hope is that the red kote will prevent the white plastic from discoloring. Of course, I don't even have the tank yet but it's next on the list.

well i just ordered some off ebay, 1 qt. i have an extra t3 tank i will try it out on before i go ahead and do it in my good tank. will probably be a few days before i get it, but when i do i will post up some pics and results for yah if you want. i have heard you just pour the stuff in, slosh it around inside the tank and then drain it, and let it dry, sometimes for a couple days, sometimes a week or so depending on how thick the coating is inside.

I've used it before in a metal tank. It's very, very thick and works awesome on metal tanks. My only real concern would be how well it will bond to the plastic.

It did stain the paint job on my 200x tank a little bit when I spilled a small amount on it. Might be wise to cover the outside of the tank in masking tape or something.
