Well kids, I'm gonna try to bring this sad sad triz engine case back to life. I really need a lefthand engine case for my sad sad POS Z, so I made a deal with the devil and got this boat anchor from sykolincoln.

Yeah, I probably paid to much, gave him $30 for shipping and his time. Otherwise it was free. heh. lol

So lemme here your thoughts, suggestions, snod remarks or what else have you as I photo-document my attempt and the impossible.

Here's the before shots. Keep in mind I'm only after the left hand engine case. lol

If you're as persistant at wet sanding as you are when trying to climb a hill, I'd say it won't be any trouble at all!

pressure clean it and soak that sucker in in some sort of oil before your start cracking nuts.

Have fun with that

Holy cow!!!! Thats a lot of rust!!!!!

Off the top of my intoxicated head, I would say take a sand blaster to it before you really get to work.

I think if you just soak all the internals (fill crankcase and tranny) in WD40 thow a topend on it and your ready to ride.:w00t:

Thats is a easy one.. the motor in my 86 looked just like that!!! First find some one with a parts washer tub, like in a auto shop and fill a tub full of it and let it soak completely under the fluid for a week! then have at it! then take everything COMPLETLY apart and glass bead blasted it.. paint,seal's,bearings..assemble! trick is to soak it under parts washer fluid..

Ha dude, I don't care man. I asked for it! Thanks for all your effort, hopefully I can salvage something.

I be the crank halfs could be blasted and poished good as new.
The electronics seem ok, flywheel is good.. I'm really interested in the left hand engine case. Its better than the one thats on my Z right now. I see 2 chips missing and that crack you were talking about. I also see a chip that looks suspect on the bottom end but I don't think its anything that can't be welded.

Its gonna be a challange. I got the flywheel and stator out, and its been soaked down with PB blaster several times now. Updated pics tomarrow!

it looks solid, lol...but seriously i agree with the bead blasting and soaking....i bet if you soak it for a week in oil and then bead blast it after you get it apart you should be ok, i bet the tranny isnt to bad, remember if you break a bolt off, it isnt the end of the world, if you take your time you can drill them out perfectly, use the right size bit with a helicoil kit and the threads are stronger than stock... just remember to use new bearing and seals, lol....

Alright well a little more progress. Got the flywheel and stator out. Not too much drama other than I wrecked my flywheel puller. Looks like I have a decent usable electrical system. yay.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/triz/100_0017.jpg

Well my liabilities seem to be one chip and some damage to the clutch lever actuator housing. Shouldn't be too terrible to weld. I just gota get some practive on aluminum first.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/triz/100_0020.jpg

I kinda almost thought this was a lost cause for a second. I was cleaning the bottom of this thing with a wire brush when I unearthed a blobl of jb weled slather accross both halfs of the case. Luckily the blob was covering a small hole on the right half and the bottom of the left half is in good shape.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/triz/100_0021.jpg

Tomarrow I'm gonna try spliting the cases and then the real fun begins, getting the bearings out without destroying anything. And tips on getting the dumb needle bearings out?

it was worth it sand blast it call or take it to a blasting company they can do it
?? mags worth? crank?? you need something to rebuild you know
tranny can be blasted you dont need the berrings lol
a dremal would work for some stuff
screws are in alluminum dont need soaked!!
crank can be pressed apart and blasted -or wire wheeled
blah blah blah

Louis Mielke

Well an update, or maybe TADA!!!

Here's my cases. All blasted, welded and almost ready to go.
http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/triz/000_0393.jpg
The welding isn't unoticable but I'm very happy espeacially since they were welded for FREE! Did a little grinding to smooth out the welds.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/triz/000_0394.jpg
The clutch actuator area is repaired wonderfully couldn't be happier.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/triz/000_0395.jpg
Another shot. I'm not sure whether to just run these naked, or paint/powder coat them. Can't decide.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m254/louis_mielke/triz/000_0396.jpg
Final shot.

Well I think my $30 dollar engine cases turned out pretty well. The only thing I need to do yet is thoroughly lap them. The gasket sufaces are rough and I'm sure that a good lapping would make the engine fit together better. So thats next on the todo list. I'm thinking I'm just gonna build a whole engine then swap it into my Z and redo the other engein cases as well. This one's gonna be done with the YZ ignition and setup for MX. If they get coated, I'm thinking bright yellow.

So can anyone tell me what my best options for all the bearings might be? Every last one is getting replaced. Does DADS do all bearings or just certain ones? Gonna hafta PM him.

I also ended up with a good Z crank, trans minus an output shaft, and some other tri-z odds and ends. Overall a good haul for 30 bones.

I think you should put it back in the toilet and try flushing again. Don't touch that, you don't know where it's been.

Louis Mielke
11-20-2006, 11:50 PM
The triz crank is gonna be ifffy. The rod and bearings are trash of course, the crank halfs are hit and miss. the right hand is usable just fine. The left hand I don't think it gonna be much good as the seal area on the crank is pitted. I may be able to polish it but it'll be along shot.

As I mentione din my post, I have a YZ250 crank I can use. Gonna make a nice MX motor. Now I just need a jug.

lookin good louis!!! looks like my pics LOL I got all my bearings from bikebandit...;)

Louis Mielke
11-21-2006, 12:03 AM
I've seen bike bandit before but after compairing thier prices with service honda I always feel like I'd be getting ripped off using bikebandit.

You gonna run your cases naked Raffa? I can;t decide. If I get them powdered I wanna have it done right and thats gonna bump my cost quite a bit.
