Does anyone know of a rear shock that will fit a 200x with little or no modification??? i'm looking for something with a little higher stance.... or perhaps a little better ride... i know these things weren't made to be a laid back ride.. but i saw how fast i broke my dads.. and the time it took to find a 200x shock reasonably priced... so does anyone know of a shock that will work???? i'm hoping with all those evil 4-wheelers out there that theirs one with a shock that will fit an 86....

Bump. Looking for the same. Why wouldn't a 300ex or 1985 200x shock work or will they?

i have no idea what a 86 shock looks like but the 2 you asked about have completely different lower mounts.

The bottom is different from 85 to the 86 style. One has a male bottom and the other is female,....cant remember at the moment which has what.

Ah. I'm pretty sure the 85 has the female lower mount and it bolts on to this "L" shaped bracket with a hole at each end. Crap.
What about 300ex?

You could check out online parts diagrams to see what the shocks look like.

Unfortunately very few shocks work correctly in anything other than the application they were intended for.
The warrior shock in the Z seems to work, that one that comes to mind that does seem to work but most don't.
They are valved and are design specific for each application.
I think allot of people that ask this question do so because they have a completely shot or pogo stick type current shock.
If your shaft is good, there is the option of rebuilding the shock that can run 100$ and upwards.... There are a few guys on the board that do it and they do it very reasonably.
I have one of those new Fox podium shocks, gotta check it out :naughty: but... It will surely be valved for a heavy quad with different mounting points. Will it work? I imagine it will, it's whether it will work well or not.
Personally, I'll buy an 800$ works shock and stuff it in there and be done with it. But it still may not have what I need at which point I may look to a 450R rearend and a custom shock. Anythings possible, but a quick cheap bolt on I have not found....

Well I stopped by my brothers on my way home and took some crude tap measure measurements of a 250X shock, then when I got home I did the same on my 86 200x. Now keep in mind it was tough to take measurements with the bikes all together but they look the same to me. With both bikes supported by the frame the shocks look to measure 15 inches from eye to eye. And the eyelet ends are around 1 1/8 wide. I think they will swap.
And here is an 84 200x with a 300ex shock, oh and a turbo. WTF. I know the 84 and 86 are apples and oranges and this has no relevence at all but it's still interesting. Sits way too high though. I have a shock from an 85 200x that is not on a bike and it only measures 12.25 inches from bolt center to bolt center which explains why the 300ex shock (15 inches) make it sit up so high.
Has no one ever tired a 250x/300ex shock on an 86/87 200x? Because I really think it will work with minimal or no mods.

HEY!! Cut it out!!
I may have to adopt you as my little brother :D
P.S. send all that heavy 10 stuff my way, I'm sure you land some crazy foreign lathe and that stuff is just taken up space  J/K - I'm still looking for a good one......

300ex shock works. Must swap the top bushing for the 3/8 200x bushing unless you drill the top mount to 7/16. Bottom will not fit unless you drill a 7/16 hole and relocate where it is bolted too. Just remember nothing is going to ride like the stock shock, simply because its not meant for it!

Cool, thanks. And my 200x rear shock is super bouncy, its like I'm riding on the spring only. So I'll have to drill on my swing arm to use it? I don't really like that. Why does it have to be drilled? What is different about it? Also the 300ex shock doesn't have the resi but the 200x does, that's kinda messed up and kinda sucks. But you can a 300ex rear shock for like $30 shipped so that's nice.
And I know the shock isn't meant for it but I really can't see ride and handling being affect much more than if you had a 250 guy on a bike then put a 150 guy on the same bike, if that makes sense.

You have to drill it because the end of the 200x shock is longer and the hole is back farther. The 300 shock coil on the bottom hits the swingarm bracket if you dont drill it do that it lifts it up a tiny bit. Ill take a pic in a bit.

That makes sense. Thanks for all your help and I look forward to the pics. I take it you have a 300ex shock on your 86? Does it ride ok?

I bet a 250EX shock would work! It looks a bit longer like the stock shock. What do you guys think about that? I actually bought a whole other 86 200x (see new thread) so I don't need one right now but it would still be nice to know and hopefully help someone else out if it will work.
