View Full Version : Yamaha YZ80 to ATC Conversion
200X Racer

Well I was looking at my YZ80 the other day when I got to thinking:rolleyes: . The wheels started turning and I decided that I would rather have another three wheeler, preferably a two stroke.
Well I started doing my homework today and I have decided what I'm going to use. For the front end I will be utilizing 200X tripple trees, with custom made fork legs. (No suspension yet). For the rearend I will be using a custom swingarm with an axle and berring carrier from a 110. I am still contemplating using a strut or an actual shock. Hopefully I will be able to use the 200X shock. If not my butt's going to be aching. I will be using aluminum aftermarket ATC 70 wheels. Lastly the plastics will be from a 110. My question is does Maier make them in blue, to somewhat match the yamaha blue? Anyways I will be posting pics along the way. Let me know what you think.

Thanks, thats actually not the frame I will be using, I have a freshly powdercoated one. The swingarm will be painted silver.

Nice!!! looks like it will be fun. What you going to use for rear fenders?

Originally I was going to use fenders off a 110, but they only come in red, so I think I am going to go with 70's beacuse I can get them in blue.

if you pull this off, let me know how it is. im looking to do similar to just about any very light weight bike. i would probably go with a CR125 though if i was using a dirt bike (which i still just may...) and use a 250R front end, and something alittle more suitable then a 110 rear..... let me know how it works and how you did it, so i can work from this....

Why don't you use the stock shock off the YZ 80? Competition ready shock, man, compression adjustable etc.

Yeah I thought about that but I bottom the bike out as it is. To be honest I really am to big for it. 6-0 200LBS. Im just trying to have fun and I figgured the 200X shock would be stiffer.
Thanks for all of the replies!!!

Just set it stiffer and up the preload, jimmy. :|

Try and use some raptor 80 plastics. I think that would look pretty sweet if it would fit and not look too small?

Raptor 80 plastics are TINY, man. I think it'd look ridiculous.

Yeah any tips for the plastics are welcome. The goal is to have a smaller, yet very fast trike. And I was just thinking that the 70 Plastics could work, but if you all have any suggestions, let me know. Also this is a simple question, but to set the preload, i just screw the large nut on the shock and compress the spring?

How about the new maier banshee/raptor style rear plastic, or the raptor 350 style warrior plastic (if you don't mind doing some cutting). I wanted blue plastic for my Z. (those were my options).

Yeah the 80s are tiny. But the yz is pretty small also. I would possibly try some 250ex fenders. Something very low profile. With the small tires it would look weird with big fenders. Maybe even some blaster fenders would work. Just cut them down race style.

200x shock would not be the way to go, i had a 200x the suspension was beat, but if i remember correctly it wasnt all that great, use a 250r shock of possible, or better yet, get a newer quad shock that has more travel, and make mounts - your going to be making mounts anyway. your whole project got me going - and i think im going to be doing a project based on a lightweight frame and a small 2-stroke engine, mainly for weight reduction, but mine will be indeed a budget project IF I DO IT, right now i dont have the funds or space to do it, but in the future it could be a possibility, i will be making a post on here in this forum to gather some information in a few days probably.

Well I worked for about 3 hours today on the tripple trees, the major problem was that the 200X used regular berrings and the YZ used tapered roller berrings. The switch was not to bad though, all I had to do was drill out the roller berrings by.042 to fit on the stem. I lucked out though, the stem happened to be the perfect length.
I put a strieght edge to the sprocket today and the sprocket will ned to be bolted to the inside of the hub. The stock sprocket cannot be used however beacuse the dampening things stick to far out. I think my shop sells just plain stamped sprockets that bypass the dampening system, so I should be OK.
Tommrow I will be mounting the swingarm. Also does anyone know if the 110 hubs will fit 70 wheels?

so tell me how you drilled out a bearing race???? its twice as hard as tool steel!!!

Dremel and a Die grinder. .042 was a bit of an exageration. lol

The early 110 bolt pattern and the atc70 bolt pattern is the same, 3x100. On my suspension 70s', the triple trees were custom made and the forks are from something like an xl125. If you made your own trees, you could use the forks off anything you wanted to, you would just have to drill the right size hole. As far as fork springs, you can get heavier fork springs and forks from the pit bike aftermarket, all those 50cc pit bikes have some serious aftermarket support, disc brakes, billet and chrome everything. The only limit is your wallet.

Well I finally got back to work on it. Project was put on a short hold this weekend, I had to take the SAT. Anyway it's time for me to cut the strut for the swingarm. To do this I need the dimensions of a stock ATC 70 INFLATED wheel/tire. And maybe even to the center of the hub. Does anyone have these numbers? My wheels and tires have not come in yet and I want to get back to work.
Thanks

Sweet project. I know the feeling when trying to build a convertion like yours. Eveything's a challenge. A little at a time & a bunch of Improvment's as you go. When I first finished mine I thought It looked good. A bunch of the board members helped me make It better. It's funny how other people can see thing's different. Keep up the good work & maybe we can have another 80 on the MX track at TF07.
