View Full Version : Will a more modern engine bolt into an 83' 250R Frame?

I'm getting tired of not being able to find parts for this 83' very easily. I'm starting to wonder whether or not I should spend 300$ getting my motor fixed or spend a bit more on a complete motor and bolt it in my frame?

First off, what is wrong with your motor? I have an 83 too, and I have not had great difficulty finding parts for it. You jusy need to do a few searches and look around.

first, the piston siezed up on me at the end (obviously) of a long ride.
next, i dropped the friggin cylinder on the way to the machine shop breaking off one of the sleeve skirts.
I just won an auction on ebay for a used 250r cylinder, but I'd like to get the bike up to 300cc and they don't seem to make the big bore kits anymore. Hence, the more modern engine. I'd rather spend 500$ on putting a newer, more moddable motor in the bike than spend 200$ fixing an older, slower motor.

you can buy a ATC 300R kit if you are patient and look around, same with topends lol i have collected 4 in a year, and thats buying them random from ebay...one being a 300cc hondaline in exellent shape, complete with piston and rings (bolt in and go!) you probly wont find a damn near brand new engine for 500$...

Sounds like what you need is one of the rare Mugen 360cc kits. One of those with a proper port job will run with ANYTHING on the showroom floor now a days in a straight line. They are out there, just gotta look around some. The Hondaline 300cc kits are alot more common, just not quite as potent.

I think I'd be perfectly happy with the hondaline 300cc, I just really wish I could find one now so I could get my bike running again, I guess for now I'll just have to deal with 250cc and hope I don't sieze another piston.

I think you might be able to get your cylinder sleeved to a 300cc but Ithink its 500 or so

Theres also the CR 480 dirtbike motor that supposedly doesnt take too much work to put in. That is what I am planning on doing when I get all the parts for it. Side by side they look very similar, one just looks a lot bigger :naughty: From what I read on here, you have to have a custom pipe and motor mounts made. Good luck with whatever you end up doing!

the 84 250R has a higher compression ratio too, well in that case you only need the top end!!!

www.kustom-kraft.com sells big bore kits for the 81-4 250R's. they will take it out to 290cc's
