I took the top end off this tri z i just picked up and found this. Iam trying to figure out what caused it, Anyone else have this happen to them? Also the right side crankcase is cracked next to the kickstarter gears. Again, i hear this is some what common. Ya think this motor is worth rebuilding?

Well..you'll need a new cylinder. Can't repair a cracked skirt, but I'm not sure what caused it. The sidecovers are real common. You can still get them new through Yamaha for about a hundred bucks. Just make sure that you reinstall the new one with all of the bolts. There's a couple that go behind the cover by the kickstarter, make sure that those are in there also.

yes get it sleeved... wisceo sleeve and piston and then have it bored to the stock size.. what bore was that on.. usally when they get up to 69.50 or 70mm the skirts get real thin and are prone to break like that. It helps when your bottom end is tight,,,,rod bearings and crank bearings....

looks like a real fresh bore job on that and someone cold siezed it or the piston rocked and cracked the skirt.the crankase probably broke from some one trying to kick over a siezed motor.get you a 86 yz dirtbike casehalf.the cases are identical to the tri-z and pretty easy to find.and you can sleeve the jug like raffa said.
