View Full Version : Here is my story

The year was 1986, I was 15 years old and off to Coos Bay, Oregon to stay with my Uncle. 10 days of whatever I wanted to do, and the only thing I wanted to do was ride the dunes on one of his atc 250r's. Had the absolute best time of my life, flew alone no rents, and the last leg of my journey was a prop job to get me to Eugene as best as I can remember. Rode the dunes for as long and as often in those 10 days.
Bull run was the name I remember of an awesome part of the Coos Bay dunes that was high banked berms and really cool to ride. Cant remember exactly but I believe sometime in that decade they decided to pave that area for tourists to go to the beach and now some of bull run is a parking lot.
Box car, the view coming to the dunes all the people working the hill by the trains and all I can think of now is the smell, the sound of the trikes working, the distinct sound of the 2 strokes vs 4 strokes, so cool.
Fast forward to about two months ago. My wife and I bought a house in October of 2004, and I left a bunch of stuff at my parents house where I reside in Florida. I cleaned out most of the clutter and amongst the clutter were many issues of 3-wheeling magazine and dirt wheels. My *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited**E dited* thought I would never need or wnat those mags and with no help from my wife, I threw them away!!!!
One month later I stumble onto this sight, I still have red butt cheeks from kicking my self in the ass for throwing them away, what an idiot. Well we are all allowed to make a few mistakes in life and somehow I gotta get over that one.
When I got back from Coos Bay I had to have a 250r, but had no place to ride and no way of getting there, I did however have a 57 chevy and that is where my time and money went for the next 20 years. Now I am 35 and have the ability to get something I forgot I wanted. I have the fever and want to get an 85 or 86 250r. I have started to look at ebay and scanned all of this forums classifieds. I see prices range just like old cars and people portray them about the same.
What do you think of this one on ebay,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&item=270036101702&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
I have a friend who lives about 80 miles from there. What is the value of this trike, all opines welcome. I will be lurking on this sight until I get my trike and will continue to look for my dream ride. Depending on how things go I will also be posting a wan to buy on the classifed.
One last thing, remember how lucky you are if you live in an area with good riding as Pinellas County where I live sucks!!! And if you are close enough to a great set of dunes then just take a deep breath of that fresh air and throw some sand on the guy behind you. :naughty:

Nice story, I threw out all of my 3W mags too!?!?! That was a LONG time ago though, and I still have always had an R of some sort in my life and it sounds as though you will soon too! My uncle lived in Coos bay about 20 years ago so I've been to those dunes but only had the chance to ride one of them lifted buses all over with a bunch of scream'n old folks in it. Didn't dune ride a trike until about 6 years ago and haven't done much of any other kind of riding since. Lets just say the paddles never come off! :TrikesOwn
That link looks decent to me, but ya really need someone to run / ride it to tell for sure.

Welcome to the boards! Good luck finding your 250R, there are still tons of nice ones out there.

Try to find one in your local classifieds before going with ebay. Also check out the craigslist page for your area (or however far you feel like driving). Ebay trikes are almost always overpriced compared to what you can find locally if you're lucky enough to be in an area where they're not too hard to find.

I burnt a bunch of dirt bike mag and some dirt wheels when I got married because it was getting rid of what I thought I "didn't need" anymore. I kicked myself in the arse a lot since then.. and the worst part is that it was all for nothin' because my marriage went up in smoke just like the magazines. Well at least I got my 350X back:TrikesOwn

Thanks for the welcome guys, I have been looking in our local classifieds and have not seen any. Craigslists I will give a look and keep an eye on that. I would be willing to spend around 2K for one in nice shape.
Last night I found some photos of me riding in the dunes, I will scan them tonight and post tomorrow. Hope you dont mind 80's big hair and mullets.

theonlyjosh, I can remeber going into a Honda dealership on US19 and drooling over the R's. I had to have one and the rents said no way, no where to ride. Well now I have one and they are going to bury me with the chevy, the harley and the honda.
I have more pics I need to scan in, good action shots of the dunes and less of my ugly mug.

Nice story and nice 250r - thats awesome.
Now you'll get the fever and you will have two more atcs within another year. You'll see.....
I also threw out all my dirtwheels from 84-85 season as well.
How much did that 250r cost? Just wondering - its in really nice shape.
Mr. Clean
10-23-2006, 03:44 PM
I am already thinking of how I can get another one so I can at least have one person to ride with. I paid roughly what the trike cost new back in 1985.
