whats the advantage of a trx swinger and what years are good? like i've said before....im starting from scratch on the whole "liquid cooled" scene so i know about nothing so far. i do have a +2 chrome swinger already and a trx axle however i dont think the +2 is going to be enough to notice.

3leggeddog
10-02-2006, 07:40 PM
i run a +2 and notice alot of difference.it changed the whole cornering/traction character of the bike.the way my weight tranfers is alot different, and the bike spins alot more.2 inchs don't sound like much, but it makes a difference.

the trx swinger is sweet for wheelies,or flat track.i found it too uncontroalable on a mx track.it's main benifit for me,was looks.if you go with the later 88-89 aluminum swinger you gotta mod the frame, but it's simple.the 86-87 i belive are the same as the atc.

well what if i throw a pro-x330 kit on here someday? :D I want an all around fast arse trike. I dont want it to stick out as a dragster like billy's or ronnies. but i want it to RUN when i decide to drag it. More like nathans black Z. (but faster of course:lol: ) I heard someplace that like a +6 is a good all around choice?!? any thoughts? the swinger i have now is going to need re-chromed anyway so i rather decide what length i want now before i chrome anything. arent +2 or +3 what they normally do for flat trackin?

3leggeddog
10-02-2006, 07:49 PM
i personally haven't ran anything more then a +3 on a hill climber.much more then that is more then i care for.chris d runs i think a 350 big bore on a trx swinger which is -1 from an atc swinger.i know my +2 works pretty sweet, and i wouldn't go any bigger.but it's yours, have fun,if it sucks, pull it back off and cut her down!

BTW Chris, your bike is too nice again. I don't know if I'm gonna step up my game again this time, I think I may have to give you the win. Besides, I have to give that T3 some love soon. Edit: You've got to do one thing though, get rid of those damn stock brake lines and put some nice braided ones on. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks Guys. It's on a fresh frame up rebuild and ready to race again. I still have to put on the 10" front rim and 20" tire, new studs and I'm ready to rip!!!

John, don't worry, I still have the race plastics and will be ready to go this winter.....if the lake freezes.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics on my computer. I will have to skim through some video.

Here is my other R. It's getting some attention now too.

JohnR.
10-03-2006, 08:57 PM
If you don't get the radiator brackets to go with the tank or mod the stockers to move the rad's back some then you can't even scratch the surface of the extra steering you'll get with the kit. Did you have that tank painted or something?

John

Billy Golightly
10-03-2006, 09:04 PM
Nope, all the new Honda tanks short track or normal size come black because thats the color of plastic they use for the quad tanks now a days. I made some mini brackets for the top that moved the rads back enough where its less then a 1/4 inch away from rubbing on the tank mounts. I made the bottom of the rads mount in the same place, bent the bottom guards around a little bit for the Aussieduner shrouds to line up. The hardest bracket to make was the top airscoop to tank one thats up by the gas cap. I bet I focked around with those for 2 hours before I got them where they looked the same and the shrouds were in relatively the same place.

WHOA!! Wait a minute!! Are you telling me that those tanks can still be bought brand new?

John

Billy Golightly
10-03-2006, 10:13 PM
Yup, but they only come in black.:) I don't believe any of the hardware is available and I know the shrouds are discontinued now though. However, Tony (Aussieduner on the forum here) has a vacume forming table and is making some reproduction shrouds to match the new black tanks.

JohnR.
10-03-2006, 10:20 PM
WOW!! I'm speechless. I'm just amazed that Honda is still making the tanks. Luckily, I've got an extra set of wings but the brackets are not much different from the stockers and the lower triple clamp is easily modded. Could you give me the part number and price Billy? I understand if you don't want to post it but maybe a PM would be OK?

John

Billy Golightly
10-03-2006, 10:25 PM
I actually got this tank second hand from Derrick Adams, he ordered it earlier this year for aproject but didn't finish it. I think the part # was in the honda box...let me see if I can find it here. I dont normally throw that stuff away but I think I might have on tht :( If I dont have it I'll PM Derrick and see if he has it.

Part number 15510-HA2-P10.

edit: the thread says that part # but the sticker on the box in the picture says: 17510-HA2-P10 Might have been a typo.

Cool! Thanks!! I've got a good friend who worked for a Honda MC dealer. His buddy is now the manager there, I will find out from him what kind of deal he can get on one. I'm not buying one but I'm curious about it now. Someone at Honda must have a special love for these ATC's if they are still producing this tank. I'll stop my shameless hi-jack of this thread now I guess.

Sorry.

Hey Kevin, Those are IMS/Roll Design pegs for the 86/87 trx250R. Now deathman told me that they do not fit the 85 peg plates. Mine must have already had 86's cause they went right on.

Tony all your stuff fits better then I expected. I've got alot of maier stuff that was so deformed you couldn't even get it near close enough to mount. Yours has a nice clean smooth finish. AND, your a board member, so that definitely makes your stuff better then Maier :D

No problem. Yes I do have a durablue strut in it and I did buy a set of 85 fork springs so I could remove the small spring when I wanted to lower it.

Danm Darius it's been a while since I saw your R. I remember when you first posted it. If you do sell it, please consider me too. I have other R's to ride so it will be treated very well. I would love a museum piece. That is definitely the cleanest "stocker" I know of.

Chris i love your yellow framed R! Freaking SWEET! Well heres mine best pic i could find i think... :)

heres a few updated pics of my 85 250r retsoration. I swapped the 86 shroud decals for the 85s and applied all 85 warning decals to match. just need to swap out the 22" dunlops for the 20s i have. It gleams pretty nice though.

Nice video Josh, nice r as well . Now you need some team green! Here some pics of a r i found this past summer. I wish I would have bought it, but a buddy was in the market for 1 and I took him there to look at it and it was way nicer than we expected. It was bought new in 85 and was only rode for a few years .Then it sat in a garge covered for a very long time. Until his son came over and saw my trike and said my dad has a 250r for sale for 1000$. Got the # , went and looked at it and took it(stold it) for 1400$. All original except for the answer silencer. He still had the stock silencer on a shelf. Heres what it looked like when we brought it home.:beer

Here's my 86, spent way too much money on it since i bought over 6 years ago as a junker. It has never looked like it was worth the dollars spent on it so i'm starting to pretty up the old girl. This is after its first step of its make over.

I see you robbed a couple things for your own R.

Sure did!

I replaced everything with quality parts though. It's a solid machine. Took it for a spin around the neighborhood today just to be 100% positive that everything is working right. Don't think the neighbors liked it but it was fun. :w00t:

It's looking so good that I don't even want to get rid of it but I just have too many toys right now.

This R is actually a lot cleaner than El Diablo. You could practicaly eat off this thing.

And yeah, this place is 80's style. I think I'm the only one living here with a vehicle that was made within the past decade. Hell maybe the past two decades. At least I cut my 80's hair off a long time ago.

Yea....there is definitely something with the air-cooled R's that still gets me, and 1upfront's is a good example of it. I agree. I almost think ANY 250R gets attention most places a guy would go to ride. I know people certainly feel a need to get a close-up look at mine a lot. I've been in love with mine for 15-16 years, and loved the 2-3 years I owned my 84, too. The air R's are cool. Thing is........85-86 trikes are more common to see.
When you see an air-cooled R out and about, you gotta check it out.......cuz you may not see one again in a long while. Speaking of which........around here, Tecates and Z's seem non-existent, where other places I've been, you at least see one on a rare occasion.
