question about case bolts

if i go to the hardware store and gets bolts for my cases will they be alright the mechanic in my town says ive got to order them hardware store bolts wont work .........its just for my case whats the big deal?

as long as they are the right size (including length) they will work just fine.
stock bolts seem to have a larger flat surface that is up against the case but i have made many a trip to the hardware for "aftermaket" nuts + bolts for my trike.
you could even go hex head if you so choose,,,
