Hello fellow 3 wheeler friends,

I'm new here and would like to introduce myself. My name is Brendan Cronin, and I live in Washinton state in the suburbs of Seattle. A year and a half ago I found an 85 tri z that I had to have. it had 20 years of neglect and jerry rigging all over it. I spent a year acquiring parts for it and rebuilding and now have one sweet looking Tri Z! Now to my problem:

I took it out on Sunday for the first real ride to basically check for function and reliability. I only came across 2 problems:

1) The double axle lock nut loosened pretty bad. I may buy a locking style with a set-nut to solve the problem

2)The problem that baffles me is the motor cuts out at higher speeds and RPM. At first I thought I might be having a fuel starvation problem so I checked the screen in the fuel pump; it was okay. Now, I'm thinking it mak need a carb rebuild, as if one of the orfices in the carp is fouled up. The other possiblity I had pondered is that perhaps it has an electrical issue. It is not bogging, it is momentarilly cutting out. It reminds me of a safety design issue that was programmed into my friend's 1994 Pontiac Firebird 12 years ago. At 104 MPH the fuel pump would cycle on and off to govern speed. This was designed into that particular car because it did not have Z rated tires. Anyway, it seems very similar, where fuel flow would be interupted.

Any body have any ideas? I will post pictures of my pride and joy that I dubbed the name "THE MONEY PIT"

Thanks,
Brendan

P.S can't find spell check and I'm on my second Molson Ice

Welcome to the board! It might be the fuel pump that is causing the problem

Clean your carb, Im betting Your main jet is Patially plugged up, make sure to pop a fresh plug in to, Another possibilty is the Igniton coil, But start with the basics,

Dammit!

My Z did that. Does it cut out in pretty even increments that increase/decrease relative to speed? If it does, your float is most likely set too low causing the bowl to run dry. It cuts out for a second while the bowl fills up enough to feed the motor and the faster you go, the faster the bowl runs dry.

I said to hell with it and put the stock carb off my 250R on there which completely cured the problem for me. Previous owner thought it was either the fuel pump or electrical but it was neither.

Good luck with it. Let us know what it turns out to be.

Thanks guys for all the great info. I ordered a carb rebuild kit for my stock Tri Z carb, and I will see what that does. I have enough parts to throw at it as trial and error if the fuel pump is bad, or the coil or anything else that it could be. I will keep you posted.

I tried to post a picture, but the file was too big. Can anyone tell me how to post?

thanks
Brendan

Nice looking TRI-Z! They are by far the sexiest of the three wheelers.

Well, after pulling the carb apart, cleaning and reinstalling, I still had the same issue. I changed the carb out for a spare stocker I had and it ran crappy, but the same cutting out was there. At this point, I felt confident it was not a fuel issue. I did some thinking and some reserch, and spoke to Sean at RM Stator in Quebec. He thought it was the coil. I changed it with a spare from a parts bike sitting in my yard. She ran like a raped ape!! I ordered a new coil anyway for reliability sense from Dennis Kirk. They did not have a listing for the Tri-Z, but I got one that works on a warrior and about 10 other Yamaha's. I think it will be a good part. I'm glad to get this behind me!

Some other good news... I bought a new Extreme Mega-Lite toy hauler on Saturday. I'm going to Sand Lake next week for it's first trip. I think it is going to be awsome!

The good news keeps comming... I found a diamond in the rough on Sunday. I located an 85 tecate for $200 on Craig's List. It ran 3 years ago, but it siezed up while sitting. I pulled the head and some jerkey used straight water in the radiator and it got through the head gasket into the piston and bottom end. The cylender has a sleeve, so it can be bored easily. I will split the cases to get any wasted bearings chaiged as well. This bike has some spendy parts on it. It has a 38mm Mikuni flat slide, a +4 or +6 axle, aftermarket swing arm and who knows what else I still need to discover.

I'll check back later after my Sand Lake ride

I had the same problem with my coil too. Cuts out @ high rpms, did it worse the more warmer it got.

38mm eh? Off of what? Does it matter? Any mods needed to fit? I think I know what I am going to invest in next :naughty:
